Description
Typhoon Valve System is a system of low-shear control valves that improves phase separation in oil production. The manufacturer offers it in place of multistage labyrinth valves, ordinary globe control valves and chokes in angle and globe designs. Typical applications are oil production, level control in separators, produced water lines and production chokes on platforms and FPSO.
In ordinary throttling valves the flow energy is dissipated in a small volume and creates large shear forces. Oil and water droplets break up, a stable emulsion forms, and separators and water treatment systems work worse. Typhoon Valve System reduces shear forces because it increases the volume in which the energy is dissipated, and the flow follows an axial cyclonic path. The oil content in the separated water and the water content in the separated oil fall; for choke applications the oil content in water is reduced by 30–80 %. The need for process chemistry (demulsifiers, flocculants, antifoams) is reduced, or this chemistry works more effectively. Materials in the cyclonic flow zone are erosion-resistant, so the service life is not inferior to the manufacturer's standard chokes.
The linear inherent characteristic controls level and flow without tuning. In the cyclonic axial system the cage is protected from direct impact of foreign objects, and in case it is destroyed the design provides an additional means of limiting the flow. Low stroking forces allow small actuators to be used, and the compact body takes less space. A full range of pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators is available.
Besides the axial RZD-LS-R, an angle CHV-LS-R system is made, interchangeable with the manufacturer's existing chokes. Sizes are up to 16″, pressure classes ASME 150–2500 or API 3000–10 000, others on request. The cyclonic system is calculated for each application using models obtained during development, to preserve droplet size as far as possible. The system was created in cooperation with a specialised development company and received the ONS 2018 Innovation Award. The materials provided describe application experience at the Oseberg C and Troll C fields.
