Description
The manufacturer has made Top Entry ball valves since the late 1960s and holds the patent for the first such valve to appear on the market. The main feature of the design is access to the ball and seats through the top cover, so the valve is serviced directly in the pipeline, without cutting it out of the line. On trunk gas pipelines, compressor stations and tie-in units this matters, because removing a large-diameter valve means a long and costly outage.
The ball is trunnion mounted, which reduces torque and makes it possible to build valves of large diameters and high pressure classes. The bore is full or reduced, and the full bore version passes cleaning and inspection pigs. Seats are self-relieving or have a double piston effect, which gives double block and bleed (DBB) and double isolation (DIB) schemes.
The range to API 6D, ANSI classes 150–600, is DN 2 to 60 inches, 900–1500 up to 48 inches, and 2500 up to 30 inches. In the API 6A version for wellhead equipment, classes 3k–15k, it is from 1 13/16 to 34 inches. Seats are metal with tungsten carbide or chromium carbide overlay, or soft with inserts of PTFE, RPTFE, PCTFE, PEEK, Devlon or nylon. Body materials are low-temperature carbon and low-alloy steel with corrosion-resistant overlay, duplex, super duplex and nickel alloys. Seals use elastomers, thermoplastics, metal and graphite. For surface protection, CRA overlay and electroless nickel plating are available.
Fire safe construction, an anti-static device and a blow-out proof stem are standard. Options are NACE requirements for sour service, an extended stem and cover for underground installation, a local position indicator, limit switches and a body equalising hole. For connection there are RF/RTJ flanges, compact and stud flanges, weld ends and hubs. For operation there is a handwheel or manual gearbox, an electric multi-turn actuator, or a pneumatic or hydraulic quarter-turn actuator.
Compliance is with ANSI, API, ASME, BS, ISO, NACE and PED. Metal-sealed top entry and side entry valves have passed API 6AV1 class II validation.

Questions and answers
What diameters and classes does the Top Entry valve cover to API 6D?
ANSI classes 150–600 are made in DN 2 to 60 inches, 900–1500 up to 48 inches, and 2500 up to 30 inches.
Can the valve be serviced without cutting it out of the pipeline?
Yes. The ball and seats are removed through the top cover, so the valve is serviced in the line. This is important for large-diameter valves on gas pipelines.
Which seat and seal versions are available?
Seats are metal with tungsten or chromium carbide overlay, or soft with PTFE, RPTFE, PCTFE, PEEK, Devlon or nylon. The schemes are self-relieving or double piston effect, and DBB and DIB are available.
