Description
SDTE axial check valves have a guided disc and spring loading. The flow passes through the body along the axis, around the central assembly with a disc that moves along a guide; when the flow rate drops, the spring returns the disc to the seat before the flow has time to reverse. Therefore the valve closes without slam (non-slam) and eliminates the water hammer and seat damage typical of ordinary swing check valves.
The manufacturer highlights the following design properties. These are slam-free closing and minimal pressure loss, a low minimum flow for full opening, a free flow path through the valve, fast response to flow changes and low noise. The valve has no stem and no stuffing box, so there are no fugitive emissions to the atmosphere. The dimensions are compact. The body is made of carbon steel A105, A216 WCB and WCC, low-temperature A350 LF2, A352 LCB and LCC, stainless F316, 22 % Cr duplex or 25 % Cr super duplex, and also 6Mo F44. The moving part works automatically, without external control.
The valves are designed to API 6D and ASME B16.34. The range is from 2 to 24 inch, ASME classes 150–2500, operating temperatures from −46 to +200 °C. Face-to-face length is to API 6D or the manufacturer standard. The seat is metal (standard), the springs are made of Elgiloy or Inconel alloys resistant to corrosion and relaxation. On request, compliance with NACE MR0175/MR0103, PED 2014/68/EU and ATEX 2014/34/EU, eye bolts for installation and other options are available.
Connections are flanged to ASME B16.5/B16.47, butt weld ends (ASME B16.25), hub, and ISO 27509 compact flanges. For subsea systems the manufacturer produces an axial check valve to API 6DSS/API 6A/API 17D with gas tightness to API 6A PSL3G/PSL4, non-elastomeric seals and a streamlined, enlarged full-bore passage.
In the gas industry axial check valves are typically installed on the discharge of centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, where pulsations and frequent flow changes quickly destroy the discs of swing check valves, and also at pump outlets, in the piping of gas compressor units, at compressor station connection points, on UGS injection lines and in gas treatment plants.

Questions and answers
Why does the valve close without slam?
When the flow rate drops, the spring returns the disc to the seat before the flow reverses. This eliminates water hammer and seat damage.
What is the range of sizes, classes and temperatures?
From 2 to 24 inch, ASME classes 150–2500, operating temperatures from −46 to +200 °C.
Where are axial check valves used in the gas industry?
On the discharge of centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, at pump outlets, in the piping of gas compressor units, on UGS injection lines and in gas treatment plants.
