RZD-SR, axial surge relief valve for pipelines, 6″–12″, ASME 150–900
An axial pilot-operated valve for protecting liquid pipelines from pressure surges, sizes from 6″ to 12″, pressure classes ASME 150–900. It works on the static pressure of the medium, without external energy. The manufacturer offers it in place of valves with nitrogen compensation.

Description
RZD-SR is an axial surge relief valve, a fast-acting protective device for liquid pipelines. The manufacturer offers it in place of surge relief valves with nitrogen compensation, valves with a flexible sleeve and angle safety valves. The valve relieves pressure waves that arise from sudden closing of valves, pump shutdown and other transient conditions. It is installed on trunk oil and product pipelines, tanker loading terminals and remote sites. The media are liquids, including oil, petroleum products and water. The valve is self-acting, the operator does not intervene in its operation, and maintenance during operation is minimal.
It is based on the Axial Flow principle, which the manufacturer has applied since 1955. The streamlined symmetrical annular channel between the inner and outer body has no sharp turns of the flow. The Total Velocity Management® concept controls the velocity of the medium in all zones of the valve and eliminates local high velocities, the main cause of noise, erosion and vibration. The design of the pilot and of the valve itself is simple: all components are proven in operation.
The valve works exclusively on the static pressure of the medium, and no external energy sources are needed. The pilot scheme does not require an expensive skid installation with nitrogen cylinders and temperature compensation devices. Without an external power supply, maintenance is reduced to a minimum, which is appropriate for remote and hard-to-reach locations. A high-capacity proportional pilot responds quickly to a pressure wave and quickly returns the system to stable conditions. After the setpoint is reached the valve opens, and under prolonged elevated pressure the instant-action pilot automatically switches the valve to control mode.
The capacity of an axial relief valve is 50–100 % higher than that of an ordinary globe valve, so a smaller valve can be selected. Sizes are from 6″ to 12″, pressure classes ASME 150–900, higher on request. The valve, trim and pilot are designed for the specific duty. Transient models are available for calculating the system response to pressure waves, and anti-cavitation trims are available against foaming in relief vessels. The model in the specification is RZD-SR-R.

Questions and answers
What sizes and pressure classes does RZD-SR have?
Sizes from 6″ to 12″, pressure classes ASME 150–900. Higher classes are made on request.
Does RZD-SR need an external power supply?
No, the valve works exclusively on the static pressure of the medium. Nitrogen cylinders and temperature compensation devices are not needed.
By how much is the capacity higher than that of a globe valve?
The capacity of an axial relief valve is 50–100 % higher than that of an ordinary globe valve. Therefore a smaller valve can be selected.
