Description

Double Expanding Gate valves create a mechanical seal on the inlet and outlet seats simultaneously and independently. At the end of travel the stem force spreads the two halves of the slab apart and presses them against the seats. This gives a double barrier with bubble-tight metal to metal sealing that does not depend on the differential pressure across the valve. The design is fully double-sided, full bore, with very low pressure loss and no turbulence, and suitable for passing pigs. The valves are serviced in line; the stem is rising or non-rising.

The manufacturer has made these valves since the early 1960s. The onshore version is designed to API 600 (range: ANSI classes 150–600 from 2 to 64 inches, 900 up to 54 inches, 1500 up to 48 inches, 2500 up to 30 inches) and to API 6A (3k–5k from 1 13/16 to 34 inches, 10k up to 16 inches, 15k up to 10 inches). Materials include low-temperature carbon or low-alloy steel with corrosion-resistant overlay, duplex, super duplex and forged nickel alloys. Working surfaces are overlaid with tungsten carbide, chromium carbide or stellite, and PTFE/RPTFE inserts are possible. Seals are elastomers, thermoplastics, metal or graphite. The bonnet is bolted or self-sealing.

Options include NACE construction, special bore, bypass, live loaded packing, soft seat, and extended stem and bonnet. Connections are RF/RTJ flanges, compact and studded flanges, weld ends and hub; operation is by handwheel or gearbox, electric multi-turn or linear pneumatic actuator. A compact version (Compact Expanding Gate) with DBB is also made.

In 2016 a 48 inch class 1500 double expanding gate valve was supplied, among others, to pipeline projects in Northern Europe. The subsea version to API 6DSS/17D (classes 150–1500 for 2–48 inches, 2500 up to 30 inches) has flexible seats with low contact stress for longer cycle life and the patented Infinity metal stem seal.

In the gas industry the valves are used as isolation valves on pipelines and underground gas storage, and at metering and custody transfer stations where verifiable double block and bleed of the cavity is required.

Questions and answers

How does the Double Expanding Gate valve achieve tightness?

At the end of travel the stem spreads the two halves of the slab apart and presses them against the inlet and outlet seats. The result is bubble-tight metal to metal sealing that does not depend on differential pressure.

What sizes are available to API 600?

ANSI classes 150–600 from 2 to 64 inches, 900 up to 54 inches, 1500 up to 48 inches, 2500 up to 30 inches.

Can the valve be serviced in line?

Yes, the design is serviced in line. The stem is rising or non-rising, and the bonnet is bolted or self-sealing.
