Compressor Antisurge — HFC antisurge control valves for compressors
Antisurge control valves with a high flow capacity (HFC) globe body for protecting centrifugal and axial compressors from surge. The labyrinth trim with a variable number of stages changes to a single-stage cage at large openings. Built on the G-Stream platform, classes up to ANSI 4500.

Description
The Compressor Antisurge control valve works in the severe duty of protecting centrifugal and axial compressors from surge. Size and design are selected individually for each installation under strict engineering criteria, taking all operating modes into account, including unit start-up and shutdown. When surge threatens, the valve quickly opens the compressor bypass and part of the flow returns to the inlet, so the operating point moves away from the surge limit.
The valve is based on the HFC (High Flow Capacity) globe body. The sizing approach excludes oversizing, because an oversized valve worsens control accuracy. For this reason CFD analysis is used to bring the flow capacity Cv of each size to its maximum. This gives the flow margin needed at the moment when the compressor bypass must open fast. For discharging large flows, extended outlet nozzles are provided, with or without silencers, which reduce the flow velocity at the valve outlet. Such nozzles are needed because discharging large flows comes with high flow velocity.
The antisurge valve trim is designed for minimum noise while keeping the flow capacity and accuracy required for antisurge control and compressor recirculation. It is a special labyrinth trim with a variable number of stages (flow turns) up to a certain stroke. At large openings it changes to a single-stage cage with a large flow area, so maximum capacity is available exactly when it is needed most. Minimum noise matters because discharging a large flow from a compressor produces a significant acoustic load.
Antisurge valves are built on the G-Stream globe valve platform: classes up to ANSI 4500, balanced trim, low-noise and multi-stage cages, versions for low temperatures. They are supported by calculations to IEC 60534 and CFD and FEA analysis. The G-Stream series has passed fugitive emission testing to ISO 15848-1 and fire testing to API 607, and has a SIL assessment to IEC 61508.
In the gas transmission system, such valves are installed in the piping of gas compressor units at compressor stations of trunk gas pipelines and underground gas storage. They are also installed on compressors at gas processing plants and LNG facilities.

Questions and answers
Which compressors is the antisurge valve intended for?
For centrifugal and axial compressors, including those at compressor stations of trunk gas pipelines and underground gas storage, gas processing plants and LNG facilities.
How is the valve size selected?
Individually for the installation, taking all modes into account, including start-up and shutdown. Oversizing is excluded, and Cv for the size is brought to its maximum by CFD analysis.
Which platform are the valves built on and what testing has been done?
The valves are built on the G-Stream platform with classes up to ANSI 4500. The series has passed testing to ISO 15848-1 and API 607, and calculations follow IEC 60534.
