BRAVA, boltless trunnion mounted ball valve with a retaining ring, API 6D / API 6A
BRAVA is a boltless trunnion mounted ball valve in which the side flanges and the cover are held by a ring instead of bolts. Designed to API 6D or API 6A, with weight lower by 25 % on average and assembly 30 % faster. The valve was launched in 2020, and its first application was a subsea installation.
- Standard
- API 6D or API 6A; ASME B16.34
- Design
- boltless connection of body and covers through a retaining ring (gas compression technology) locked with wedges/a ring
- Weight reduction
- 25 % on average (depends on DN, class and material); example, subsea 12" class 900

Description
BRAVA (Boltless Reliable Advanced VAlve) is a ball valve of a new architecture, launched in 2020. The concept was developed jointly with the manufacturer's specialist division and, according to the manufacturer, was at the patenting stage. The idea is to do away with the bolted connections between the body and the side flanges and cover and to replace them with a retaining ring. This technology has long been widely used in gas compression equipment in the oil and gas industry.
By its shape the ring works as a shoulder that holds the side flanges and/or the cover. Under any operating modes and external loads it stays in continuous contact and wedges between the body and the retained part. An additional locking system (wedges, a solid or split ring) holds it in place during all operations. Finite element analysis and a series of tests were used to work out a simplified architecture that is equivalent to a bolted connection in tightness and able to take pipeline loads: tension, shear and bending moment.
There are no bolts, so the wall thickness of the closing parts is calculated for pressure only, and no additional flange allowance for bolts is needed. The weight is reduced by 25 % on average, depending on diameter, pressure class and material, and assembly time is reduced by 30 %. The comparison is given for a 12 inch class 900 subsea valve. Fewer parts, less material and less machining give a smaller carbon footprint, and maintenance is simpler, with a shorter range of spare parts and tools. Lower weight and smaller dimensions make piping and whole-plant layout easier.
Functionally, BRAVA corresponds to a standard trunnion mounted valve. Design is to API 6D or API 6A and ASME B16.34, with fire safe construction, full or reduced bore, single or double sealing, self-relieving seats or double piston effect, a blow-out proof stem, an anti-static device, double block and bleed with double isolation, and metal-to-metal sealing. The design is interchangeable with traditional ball valves and fits into existing process schemes. The manufacturer is considering this concept for other types of valves as well, and the first application is a subsea installation in the Gulf of Mexico. For onshore gas facilities the valve is of interest for its lower weight and lower cost of ownership on large-diameter valves.
