Description

Axial Flow shutoff valves have a flow path profiled for maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The flow runs along the body axis without sharp turns, so pressure loss is low and turbulence is minimal. The plug is pressure balanced, and only a small stem force is needed. The valve acts quickly even in large sizes and at high pressures. This is why axial valves are the basis of ESD emergency shutdown systems and HIPPS/HOPPS overpressure protection systems, for which the manufacturer has proven designs.

The body is compact and light. A double seat system gives tight shutoff, and the bearings are self-lubricating. Seats are metal or soft. Anti-cavitation and low-noise trim, tungsten carbide trim, and versions for low temperatures and erosive and corrosive media are supplied to order.

Range from 2 to 72 inches, pressure up to class ANSI 4500, PN 420 or API 20k. Materials: carbon, low-temperature carbon and low-alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels, duplex and super duplex steels, nickel alloys. Stem packing is graphite, PTFE or low-emission. Connections are ANSI and DIN flanges (RF/RTJ), API 6A flanges and hub connections. Actuators are pneumatic, electric, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic.

The design has passed fugitive emission tests to ISO 15848-1 and fire tests to API 607, and has a functional safety assessment to IEC 61508 with PFD values up to the SIL 3 range. A subsea version for deepwater HIPPS systems is also made.

In the gas industry axial shutoff valves work as isolation valves at the inlet of gas distribution stations and compressor stations, as emergency shutdown valves at underground gas storage, gas processing plants and LNG terminals. They are also installed as final elements of HIPPS that protect pipelines with a lower design pressure from overpressure from the source side.
