WIC1 g2 — self-powered protection relay for RMU and packaged substations
WIC1 g2 is a family of current-transformer-powered protection relays for RMU ring main units, packaged substations and step-up transformers of wind and solar plants. The relay works without auxiliary supply and is ready for operation in less than one cycle after current appears.

Description
The WIC1 g2 belongs to the protection relays powered from current transformers (self-powered). The relay needs no auxiliary supply and takes the energy for operation from the signals of the measuring CTs. WIC1 is therefore installed where no auxiliary supply is available or it is too expensive: in RMU ring main units of distribution networks, on step-up transformers of wind and solar plants, and on feeders. The relay also serves as backup protection in case of loss of auxiliary supply, and during a black start it protects the grid when other relays have already failed because the batteries are discharged.
The start-up time is less than one cycle. If a breaker is closed onto a fault in a grid that is still earthed after maintenance, the WIC1 issues a trip command while other devices are still booting. The minimum current for the power supply to start is 0.25 In,min for three-phase and 0.35 In,min for single-phase current. For overcurrent protection 12 inverse-time characteristics are available, for earth-fault protection 13, and the earth-fault current is either calculated or measured through the optional 1 A input. The relay withstands high humidity and an average temperature above 50 °C, the operating temperature range is −40…+80 °C, and the service life is 25 years without maintenance.
The family has four versions. The WIC1-1 Base, the WIC1-2 with DIP switches and the WIC1-3 with HEX switches are set manually. The WIC1-4 has dual power supply from CTs and from an auxiliary source, so communication and early earth-fault detection are added to the core that is protected against loss of supply. It works over Modbus RTU through RS485 at 57 600 and 115 200 baud or over Modbus TCP through electrical or optical Ethernet. The Standard, Advanced and Professional packages cover the stages I>, I>>, I>>>, IG>, IG>>, inrush blocking, thermal protection, unbalance and negative sequence protection, breaker failure protection, trip circuit supervision, breaker wear and load resource monitoring, cold load pickup and substation battery monitoring in the WIC1-4.
The relay dimensions are 125×170 mm. The form factor matches the previous generation, so the cabinet is not reworked and previously installed WIC1 CTs are reused. Options include the DiggiMEC remote panel with an LCD display and up to three mechanical flag indicators (cutout 92×45 mm per DIN IEC 61554), wide-range WIC1 CTs, adapter CTs for standard 1 A/5 A CTs, the PC4 adapter for software updates, and the WI1SZ4 and WI1SZ5 flag indicators. The relay can be set with the free Smart view software, through the DiggiMEC or with switches. The relays are tested and certified by KEMA and carry the CE mark.

Questions and answers
Does the WIC1 g2 need an auxiliary supply?
No, the relay is powered from measuring current transformers. The minimum current for the power supply to start is 0.25 In,min for three-phase and 0.35 In,min for single-phase current, and the WIC1-4 version has dual power supply.
Can the WIC1 g2 be installed in place of a previous-generation WIC1 relay?
Yes, the form factor is the same, the cabinet is not reworked, and installed WIC1 CTs are reused. The relay dimensions are 125×170 mm.
Does the WIC1 g2 work with standard 1 A or 5 A CTs?
Yes, through adapter CTs. The basic version is designed for special wide-range WIC1 CTs.
