SO-55, SO-55B-KSP, SO-5S-KZ — communication controllers and protection concentrators
The SO-55 is a modular communication and control controller from the manufacturer, part of the SO-5 family of station devices. It works as a protection concentrator, a station communication controller, a transformer voltage regulator or a protocol converter. It is used in substation automation systems of 110 kV and MV substations to integrate protection relays of different vendors into SCADA.

Description
The concentrator reads data from external devices over the protocol specific to each of them, standardizes it, places it in a database and provides it to other devices connected to the concentrator or to virtual devices, that is software modules inside. Mixed versions are also possible, for example a station controller with extended protection servicing. The optional RTU unit adds collection of digital signals, measurements, control with interlocking, control sequences and regulation of the transformer tap changer.
As a protection concentrator the SO-55 serves digital protection relays in switchgear of all voltage classes and simultaneously connects protection relays of many manufacturers (ABB, AEG, Elkomtech, ITR, JMTronic, Polon, REFA, Schneider, Siemens, ZEG and others) and other IEDs. Polling is simultaneous or grouped, and the states of switching apparatus are transmitted on events. Relay protection departments get remote access to the protection relays through an engineering channel in the proprietary protocol of the protection. The communication medium is arbitrary (RS-232, RS-485, modem, Ethernet, optical fiber), and so is the network topology.
The controller is assembled from interchangeable modules in a 6U/19″ cassette or a dedicated case. These include central processors, communication modules and input-output modules with the MS bus, input-output modules with the LVDS bus from the SO-52v11 family, and power supply units, and the cassette supports both buses at the same time. Available are galvanically isolated RS-232, RS-485, current loops, Ethernet, single-mode and multimode optical fiber, Ethernet switch functions, a PSTN modem, GPRS, trunked radio and the 430–450 MHz band. A typical configuration has several single and redundant channels to local and remote dispatch centers and from ten to several tens of channels to station devices.
The supported protocols are PN-EN 60870-5-101/103/104, DNP 3.0, Modbus, SPA, PN-EN 61850, SNMP and PPM2 in MASTER and SLAVE modes, the PRP protocol, up to 96 asynchronous serial channels and up to 200 logical channels, expandable to 520. Time is synchronized from GPS/GLONASS with an accuracy of 1 µs, by PTP, IRIG-B or NTP/SNTP. Cybersecurity is implemented under PN-EN 62351, IEEE P1686 and PN-ISO/IEC 27001. Digital input and output modules perform station interlocking and signaling. The family also includes the SO-55B-KSP concentrator, the SO-5S-KZ protection concentrator and the SO-5S-VKONC virtual protection concentrator.
