PROTECTA HSBT, METRA — high-speed bus transfer for bus sections with motor load
HSBT and METRA of the DAUT family of the PROTECTA line perform automatic transfer to a standby source in substations and auxiliary power systems. HSBT quickly transfers bus sections with induction motors to the standby source, METRA transfers the busbar supply from the service transformer to the standby one. Supports IEC 61850 Edition 2.
- HSBT
- fast transfer to the standby source of bus sections that supply induction motors, up to transfer onto a live section
- Supervision
- voltage and frequency of coasting-down motors on the de-energised section, selection of the closing moment
- Schemes
- simple and complex busbar schemes, one HSBT function per circuit breaker
- METRA
- automatic transfer of the busbar supply from the service to the standby transformer on trip signals

Description
HSBT and METRA are devices of the DAUT family of the PROTECTA line for automatic transfer to a standby source in substations and auxiliary power systems where the shortest possible supply interruption matters. HSBT (High Speed Bus Transfer) is an intelligent device for fast transfer of bus sections that supply induction motors from the main source to the standby source. Uninterrupted supply is critical for the auxiliary systems of power plants and industrial installations with a large number of induction motors.
If the main supply trips, HSBT quickly switches automatically to the standby source. The device takes into account the change in voltage and frequency of the large coasting-down motors connected to the de-energised section and selects the closing moment so as to avoid large current surges and mechanical shocks in the rotating machines. Transfer up to the mode of closing onto a live section is supported. The device works with both simple and complex busbar schemes (one HSBT function per circuit breaker) and contains control and interlocking functions set by the user.
METRA is a control system for the supply of high-voltage busbars. The factory configuration performs automatic transfer of the busbar supply from the service transformer to the standby one. The transfer is started by trip signals of the service transformer from its protections. The device checks that the circuit breaker of the faulted transformer is open and only then issues the closing command to the standby supply breaker. Closing is performed if the standby transformer is energised from the supply side. From the positions of the circuit breakers and disconnectors METRA determines the state of the substation, and the permitted states are programmed to the customer's requirements. The transfer takes place automatically, without operating personnel, with a very short dead time.
Both devices are built on the modular PROTECTA platform, are configured with the free EuroCAP software and support IEC 61850 Edition 2 and other protocols of the line. The set of functions is defined by software blocks (SFB), and each device is specialised for a particular application. Time is synchronised via NTP, a minute pulse or IRIG-B. Applications: auxiliary systems of thermal and nuclear power plants, chemical, metallurgical and oil and gas enterprises, substations with critical consumers.

Questions and answers
Which motors is HSBT intended for?
For induction motors supplied from a bus section. The device analyses the voltage and frequency during coasting down and selects the moment of standby closing without large current surges.
What does METRA do?
It automatically transfers the busbar supply from the service transformer to the standby one on trip signals from its protections. First it checks that the circuit breaker of the faulted transformer is open.
Where are HSBT and METRA used?
In the auxiliary systems of thermal and nuclear power plants, at chemical, metallurgical and oil and gas enterprises and in substations with critical consumers.
