IRS self-powered overcurrent and breaker failure relay
IRS is an overcurrent protection relay for cells and RMUs without a guaranteed auxiliary power source. The relay is powered from the main CTs, from auxiliary AC/DC or through a USB port, and provides overcurrent protection, breaker failure protection and harmonic restraint.

Description
The main idea of IRS is that the protection runs on the line current itself, so the cell needs no storage battery. When the current through the CTs is sufficient, the relay is powered from them and trips the fault without an external source. With auxiliary AC/DC the relay works from it too, and the USB port allows configuration without powering the cell. The breaker is tripped through a bistable low-power coil LPC, powered by the CTs. Harmonic restraint keeps the overcurrent protection stable against transformer inrush currents.

Questions and answers
What powers the IRS relay?
The main CTs, auxiliary AC/DC or a USB port. The protection works without an auxiliary source.
What protection functions does IRS have?
Overcurrent protection, breaker failure protection and harmonic restraint.
How does IRS trip the breaker without a battery?
Through a bistable low-power coil LPC, which gets enough energy from the current circuits.
