Description
The MCDLV4 from the HighPROTEC line protects cables and overhead lines up to 40 km long. The system consists of two terminals at the line ends and replaces up to six separate devices. These are two cable or line differential protection devices, two backup directional feeder protection devices, one in-zone transformer differential protection and one grid decoupling protection. The functions are adapted to VDE-AR-N 4110:2023-09.
If a transformer is included in the line or cable connection, the in-zone transformer differential function protects it in full. The communication channel between the two terminals carries up to 16 binary signals and 4 trip commands, so copper pilot cables between substations are no longer needed. Settings, monitoring and fault analysis of the remote end can be handled without sending personnel to site.
The backup directional feeder protection has six phase overcurrent stages, directional and non-directional, with 51C/51V functions, and four earth-fault stages, non-directional or directional with multi-polarisation. There is also wattmetric earth-fault protection, two load unbalance stages, six voltage protection stages and six voltage unbalance monitoring stages. The flexible fourth voltage input works as VE> or for synchronism check. Six frequency and six power stages are complemented by two power factor stages and a limit on the maximum exported power. The decoupling protection package includes non-selective unloading by active power direction, FRT (LVRT) profiles coordinated with auto-reclosing, Q-U protection, automatic reconnection, frequency protection (f<, f>, df/dt, vector jump), breaker trip transfer and synchronism check.
Each terminal controls up to six switching devices and keeps a breaker wear record. Communication with the SCADA system runs over Modbus, Profibus, DNP3.0, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103 and IEC 60870-5-104 with individual data point assignment, time is synchronised by SNTP and IRIG-B, and cybersecurity functions are provided. The hardware is dual-core, and non-volatile recorders store waveforms of 120 s, 20 faults, 300 events and a trend of 4000 records. Smart view and waveform analysis are supplied at no extra charge under the all-inclusive concept. The system is installed on cable lines of urban and industrial 6–35 kV networks, on renewable power export lines and on interconnections between substations.
