KSI shell and tube heat exchangers for gas heating before pressure reduction, up to 85 bar

KSI is a standard series of vertical BEU-type shell and tube gas heat exchangers for heating gas ahead of pressure reduction stages. The design pressure of the tube side is 8.5 MPa (85 bar) or 4.63 MPa (46.3 bar), the temperature is from −10 to +100 °C.

Description

When the pressure of natural gas is reduced at gas distribution stations and pressure reducing stations, its temperature falls because of the Joule–Thomson effect. Without heating, this leads to icing of regulators and pipelines, formation of hydrates and condensate, and gas temperature going outside the permissible limits for the equipment and networks. The KSI heat exchanger compensates for this cooling by heating the gas before reduction.

The standard design is a vertical shell and tube unit of the BEU type (with U-shaped tubes). The gas passes through the tubes, and the heating medium moves in the shell side, so design pressure and temperature are set separately for the tube (gas) side and the shell side. Hot or superheated water or steam is used as the heating medium, per customer requirements. The heat exchangers are suitable for natural gas, air, propane and other non-aggressive gases.

The tube (gas) side is made in two versions by design pressure, 8.5 MPa (85 bar) and 4.63 MPa (46.3 bar). The design temperature is from −10 to +100 °C, the corrosion allowance is 0 mm. The shell side is designed for 0.6 MPa (6 bar) at the same temperature, with a corrosion allowance of 1 mm.

The gas nozzles are made with WNRF weld neck flanges of class 600 for the 85 bar version and class 300 for the 46.3 bar version per ASME B16.5. The water nozzles and the shell-side relief valve have PN 16 flanges per EN 1092-1, the condensate drain from the cover has an Rp thread per EN 10226, and the earthing is copper. A double Rp 1/4 connection is provided for heating the gas in the pilot circuit of the pressure regulator. The size range includes KSI 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, the overall dimensions are given in the technical brochure, and other connections are possible on request.

On request the heat exchanger is supplied with a pressure gauge and a pressure switch, a relief valve on the tube side or the shell side, and an automatic air vent. The field of use is gas distribution stations, high-pressure pressure reducing stations, compressor stations, underground gas storage, liquefaction and regasification plants, floating units, gas conditioning, power plants and heavy industry. Outside the standard series, heat exchangers and heaters are made to customer requirements.

Questions and answers

Why is gas heated before pressure reduction?

After the pressure is reduced, the gas cools because of the Joule–Thomson effect. Without heating, icing of regulators and pipelines and formation of hydrates and condensate are possible.

What pressure and temperature are the tube side and the shell side designed for?

The tube side is designed for 8.5 MPa (85 bar) or 4.63 MPa (46.3 bar), the shell side for 0.6 MPa (6 bar). The design temperature is from −10 to +100 °C.

Which heating media and sizes are available?

The heating medium is hot or superheated water or steam. The size range includes KSI 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
