HIPPS, high integrity pressure protection systems (mechanical and electronic), 2″–48″, SIL 3
HIPPS is a mechanical or electronic overpressure protection system for pipelines of 2″–48″ and larger, ASME 150–2500 and API 3000–10 000, SIL 3 rated. The loop shuts off the high-pressure source in 2 seconds and makes it possible to dispense with flare and relief systems or to reduce them.
- Purpose
- High Integrity Pressure Protection System, shutoff of the overpressure source in 2 s with a level of reliability not lower than a safety relief valve
- Versions
- mechanical (mechanical initiators, no external energy) and electronic (logic solver and sensors); final element separately; skid mounting
- Final element
- axial shutoff valve with the manufacturer's actuator
- Sizes
- 2″–48″ and larger

Description
HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) is a safety overpressure protection system implemented as a mechanical or electronic Safety Instrumented System. It shuts off the source of overpressure within 2 seconds with a level of reliability not lower than that of a pressure safety relief valve. Therefore flare, relief and drain systems can be omitted or reduced, releases to the atmosphere can be eliminated, and personnel, the environment and equipment can be protected where high pressure and high flow rates occur. The system also improves the economic feasibility of field development when the downstream pipeline is rated for a lower pressure. Other names for such systems are emergency shutdown systems (SSD/ESD), safety instrumented functions (SIF) and overpressure protection systems (OPPS).
A complete HIPPS loop contains initiators (electronic or mechanical pressure and flow sensors), a logic solver in the electronic version, and final elements. The final elements, that is, a combination of a valve and an actuator with solenoids or mechanical initiators, bring the process to a safe state. If required, the system is mounted on a skid. A mechanical HIPPS can work autonomously, without any external energy. The final element is the manufacturer's axial shutoff valve with the manufacturer's actuator and a stroke time of 2 seconds. The manufacturer can supply both a certified final element for integration by other companies and a fully integrated system assembled by certified functional safety engineers.
Sizes range from 2″ to 48″ and larger, pressure classes ASME 150–2500 or API 3000–10 000 and higher. The systems are designed to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 or API 14C, and the products are certified to EN 14382 and IEC 61508 SC3 (Route 2H) within an implemented functional safety management system. Systems of SIL 3 and even SIL 4 are supplied with a proof test interval of more than 12 months, without partial stroke and additional electronics. Since the mid-1990s the manufacturer has kept a failure database confirmed by TÜV Rheinland and other organisations: more than 50 000 years of operation and more than 3700 valve/actuator combinations on clean and contaminated media.
The materials provided show HIPPS skids for the TurkStream gas pipeline, HIPPS for a Gasunie blending station, seismic-rated HIPPS in Peru, HIPPS for FPSO and subsea HIPPS modules.

Questions and answers
How quickly does HIPPS shut off the pressure source?
The system shuts off the source of overpressure within 2 seconds. The level of reliability is not lower than that of a pressure safety relief valve.
What SIL level is HIPPS rated for and to which standards?
Systems of SIL 3 and even SIL 4 are supplied with a proof test interval of more than 12 months. Design follows IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 or API 14C, and the products are certified to EN 14382.
Can HIPPS work without an external power supply?
Yes, a mechanical HIPPS with mechanical initiators works autonomously, without external energy. The electronic version adds a logic solver and sensors.
