Description
HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) is an overpressure protection system. When pressure rises above the permissible level, it quickly shuts off the source and prevents gas release to the atmosphere, as happens when safety valves operate. The manufacturer has the experience and certification to supply HIPPS as a single package. One supplier is responsible for the valves, actuators, controls, sensors and certification, rather than several contractors.
The package includes shutoff valves of its own manufacture (axial, slab gate or ball), hydraulic or pneumatic actuators, a hydraulic or pneumatic control system, pressure transmitters, a block manifold and a logic solver. Fire protection, a SAR safety analysis report and SIL safety integrity level certification are supplied in addition. Integrated factory acceptance tests of the whole system (I-FAT) are held entirely at the manufacturer's site, and assessment and support are provided by a functional safety engineer (FSE).
Safety calculations are made by the company's own department to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 or as a failure modes, effects and criticality analysis to IEC 60812. For subsea systems the manufacturer designs and builds both valves and actuators itself, and SIL values are assessed from its own failure database, compiled from operator feedback over many years of equipment operation. The manufacturer issues declarations of conformity to the European directives PED, ATEX and Machinery Directive and SAR reports to IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISO/TR 12489 and ISO 14224.
Axial valves and slab gate valves have passed fugitive emission tests to ISO 15848-1 and fire tests to API 607, and PFD values lie in the range up to SIL 3. Ball valves and metal-sealed slab gate valves have passed API 6AV1 class II validation, which meets BSEE requirements for use in HIPPS and receiving valves in the Gulf of Mexico.
Typical gas industry applications are protection of gas pipelines and flowlines with a lower design pressure from wellhead or trunk line pressure, protection of the inlet of gas distribution stations, gas processing plants and compressor stations, and of subsea pipelines.

Questions and answers
What components does a HIPPS system consist of?
Shutoff valves (axial, slab gate or ball), hydraulic or pneumatic actuators, a control system, pressure transmitters, a block manifold and a logic solver. Fire protection is supplied in addition.
What SIL level is HIPPS confirmed to, and to which standards?
PFD values of the components lie in the range up to SIL 3. Calculations are made to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, and SAR reports are prepared to IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISO/TR 12489 and ISO 14224.
What facilities is HIPPS supplied for, and under which directives?
For protection of gas pipelines and flowlines, gas distribution station inlets, gas processing plants, compressor stations and subsea pipelines. The manufacturer issues declarations of conformity to the PED, ATEX and Machinery Directive.
