REVO: new generation wind turbine gearbox with a torque density of 300 Nm/kg
REVO is the newest generation of wind turbine gearboxes, developing the principles of the High Density X concept. Torque density reaches 300 Nm/kg, and the diameter is up to 25 % smaller than in the previous generation. Gearboxes of the 8 MW+ class remain transportable.

Description
The manufacturer's task is simple. Wind turbines must receive more power without growth in size. Components must remain transportable to open up new sites, and the nacelle mass must be low so that massive foundations are not needed.
According to the manufacturer, over the last decade the torque density of gearboxes has more than doubled, which made it possible to double power in the same volume. The validated REVO design raises torque density to 300 Nm/kg while keeping the previous level of quality. The gearbox diameter is up to 25 % smaller than in the previous generation, and gearboxes of the 8 MW+ class can be moved by standard logistics.
The main REVO technologies are as follows. The first concerns the layout of the planetary stages: the number of stages and of planets per stage strongly affects the size. The move to three planetary stages and the increase in the number of planets in the first stage to eight or nine spread the load over more gears and reduce the load on bearings and housing. Plain bearings from six planets onward are necessary for size reasons in a three-stage gearbox. New materials were developed for the gears and induction hardening of internal gears was mastered, which raised load capacity. The technology was verified on component test benches, in full-scale gearbox tests and in several small series. A compact tooth design with the same resistance to root breakage was confirmed by analysis of field data from more than 400 GW of installed gearboxes and generators.
REVO is a set of technologies and not a rigid design. Which solutions go into the drivetrain of a particular turbine is determined by the customer's requirements. To find bottlenecks the manufacturer uses scenario calculations, and separate research projects were carried out for the limitations found.
All the main innovations are combined in one prototype that underwent intensive testing for several months. The prototype was assembled to demonstrate the working capability of the system as a whole. For comprehensive analysis, 1.5 km of measuring cables were laid in the gearbox. It is used in new onshore and offshore high power wind turbines, including for previously hard-to-reach regions. The best result comes from combination with GENERA generators.

Questions and answers
What torque density does the REVO gearbox have?
300 Nm/kg. The gearbox diameter is up to 25 % smaller than in the previous generation, and gearboxes of the 8 MW+ class remain transportable.
Why does REVO use plain bearings?
From six planets onward they are necessary for size reasons in a three-stage gearbox. The number of planets in the first stage has been increased to eight or nine.
Which generators does REVO combine best with?
The best result comes from combination with GENERA generators. The particular set of REVO technologies for a turbine is determined by the customer's requirements.
