Description

The manufacturer has been developing these technologies since 1981 and has extensive experience in helical planetary stages and superfinishing of gears. The installed base of its gearboxes exceeds 250 GW on onshore and offshore turbines, in versions for 50 and 60 Hz grids.

The current range according to the manufacturer is as follows. High Density X is designed for power up to 10 MW, has three planetary stages and 5 600 kNm, and is intended for onshore turbines. The medium speed gearbox delivers up to 10 MW, 2 planetary stages, 10 000 kNm, offshore turbines. High speed gearboxes come in 8 MW (2 stages, 4 500 kNm, offshore), 4 MW (2 stages, 3 300 kNm, onshore and offshore; 3 150 kNm, offshore), 3 MW (2 stages, 2 300 and 2 500 kNm, onshore) and 2 MW (one planetary stage, 950 kNm, onshore). The typical designations use the series PEAB, PEAS, PEAC, PZAB, PZFB.

The High Density X concept increased torque density by more than 25 % compared with the previous generation. This was achieved by reducing mass, optimizing the housing topology and using several planets in three planetary stages with a balanced distribution of the gear ratio. The move from two to three planetary stages and the increase in the number of planets in the first stage from four to eight or nine spread the load over more gears. According to the manufacturer, the envelope that held a 4.5 MW gearbox in 2017 holds a 9 MW gearbox in 2024.

Among the technology options are in-house developed and manufactured plain bearings instead of roller bearings for the planets. They have been used in series gearboxes since 2017, with more than 50 000 units and about 23 GW of installed capacity, and a lower failure rate. Also available are induction-hardened internal gears and the Digital Gearbox with measurement of real torque for assessing remaining life. Plain bearings are available for high speed gearboxes and HybridDrive. The manufacturer supplies gearboxes for new turbines and, through Service360, new and refurbished replacement gearboxes and complete drivetrains with integration on the rotor and generator side.
