ARPEX ARV / ARPEX GIGA — wind turbine drivetrain couplings (gearbox to generator)
ARPEX ARV and ARPEX GIGA are couplings for wind turbine drivetrains that transmit torque between the gearbox and the generator. ARV is mounted and removed radially, without moving the units, and is supplied as a replacement for turbines up to the 6 MW power class.

Description
Couplings are the third group of the company's own wind turbine drivetrain components, alongside gearboxes and generators. According to the manufacturer, it has been developing wind turbine couplings for more than 30 years and has a full series range, and the products are made at production sites in different countries.
ARPEX ARV couplings are installed in the drivetrain between the gearbox and the generator. They transmit torque and compensate for shaft misalignment caused by deformation of the frame and by the elastic mounts of the units. The compact design of the ARV allows radial mounting and removal, so the coupling can be replaced without moving the gearbox or the generator, which greatly simplifies work in the nacelle. As part of service, ARV couplings are supplied as replacements for turbines up to the 6 MW power class.
The manufacturer offers ARPEX ARV and ARPEX GIGA for any wind turbine concept, that is, for low-, medium- and high-speed drivetrains. Judging by its name and positioning, the GIGA series is intended for high torques, but detailed characteristics (torques, permissible misalignments, masses) are not given in the materials provided. For a medium-speed HybridDrive drivetrain, the manufacturer gives an example coupling with a rated torque of 9 MNm and permissible misalignments of ±5 mm axial, 1.4 mm radial and 0.3 mrad angular.
The couplings are used when equipping new wind turbine drivetrains and for replacement on existing onshore and offshore turbines, including under the multi-brand Service360 service, which supplies new couplings, gearboxes, generators and main shafts. Alongside couplings, the manufacturer offers GENERA generators for turbines with gearboxes up to 20 MW, for onshore and offshore applications, so couplings, gearboxes and generators can be selected for one drivetrain. The choice of size depends on the torque and misalignments of the particular drivetrain, so the torques and permissible misalignments for ARV and GIGA are confirmed in the manufacturer's documentation. To select a size, the rated torque, the drivetrain speed class and the expected axial, radial and angular misalignment are needed, and these data are compared with the coupling characteristics in the documentation.

Questions and answers
Where in the wind turbine drivetrain are ARPEX ARV couplings installed?
Between the gearbox and the generator. They transmit torque and compensate for shaft misalignment caused by deformation of the frame and the elastic mounts of the units.
Can an ARV coupling be replaced without moving the units?
Yes, the design allows radial mounting and removal without moving the gearbox or the generator. As part of service, ARV couplings are supplied as replacements for turbines up to the 6 MW power class.
Which wind turbine drivetrains are ARPEX ARV and ARPEX GIGA intended for?
For low-, medium- and high-speed drivetrains. For a medium-speed HybridDrive drivetrain, an example coupling is given with a rated torque of 9 MNm and permissible misalignments of ±5 mm axial, 1.4 mm radial and 0.3 mrad angular.
