3EB — surge arresters for rolling stock and traction power supply (AC 25 kV / DC 3 kV)

3EB are surge arresters for rail transport with a rated voltage up to 45 kV, for AC 25 kV and DC 3 kV systems. They protect the traction equipment of rolling stock, traction substations and the overhead contact line from lightning and switching overvoltages. Applications cover electric locomotives and multiple units, metro and trams.

Description

The company has made railway arresters for more than 80 years. During an impulse the metal-oxide varistors become conductive and divert the current to earth. The insulation is then not punctured, and the equipment does not fail.

3EB4 has a composite housing made of a fiberglass tube with silicone sheds. It is designed for AC systems up to 25 kV and DC up to 3 kV, for trains at speeds up to 420 km/h and a rated short-circuit current of 50 kA. The housing is hydrophobic and withstands temperatures from −40 to +70 °C and UV radiation. In an overload the arc exits through the directional pressure relief device, and internal parts are not ejected. The unit can be turned so that in a failure the equipment and passengers nearby are not harmed, so 3EB4 is also suitable for stationary installation in places accessible to people. 3EB4 is fitted on high-speed and intercity trains, suburban and regional multiple units, multi-system locomotives, in metro, on light rail and trams, and in electrification equipment.

3EB5 is made with Cage Design™ technology, with silicone molded directly onto the varistors. It is intended for the same AC 25 kV and DC 3 kV systems, speeds up to 320 km/h and a short-circuit current of 50 kA. The AC version is tested to IEC 60099-4, the DC version to EN 50526-1.

3EB2 and 3EB3 have a silicone housing and work in DC systems of urban transport and traction power supply. 3EB2 belongs to class DC-B, 3EB3 to class DC-C with increased energy capability.

All railway arresters have passed fire safety tests under DIN EN 17084, DIN EN ISO 5659-2 and DIN EN 45545-2. Shock and vibration have been verified under IEC 61373, without which a device cannot be fitted on rolling stock. Each arrester undergoes acceptance tests and is supplied with a test report, and the quality system complies with ISO 9001:2008. According to the manufacturer, the arresters are easy to install, need almost no maintenance, last long and can be adapted to special customer requirements.
