CONNEX plug-in surge arresters with a rated voltage Ur from 42.5 to 180 kV protect metal-enclosed GIS and transformers with CONNEX sockets. The arrester is inserted directly into the socket of the equipment, and the protection stands compactly right on the transformer or GIS. According to the manufacturer, on the secondary side of a transformer only CONNEX offers solid-insulated surge arresters alongside conventional plug-in connections.

Description
Insulation and field grading are made of solid silicone. There are no environmentally hazardous liquids or insulating gases inside. There is no internal gas pressure either, so pressure vessel requirements and gas monitoring fall away and the design is compact. The active part is built of metal-oxide resistors without spark gaps with high thermal stability and is hermetically sealed against moisture and surface contamination. The arrester consists of a contact element, an insulating part, a silicone body, a corrosion-resistant housing and a back cover.
The devices are suitable for offshore facilities, outdoor installation and indoor use. They work in networks with isolated, compensated and solidly earthed neutral, and each one undergoes routine tests. Fully encapsulated CONNEX components do not require minimum clearances between phase connections, so urban substations can be made tighter, including underground ones or ones built into buildings.
Size 4 arresters have Ur from 42.5 to 72.5 kV and continuous operating voltage Uc from 34 to 58 kV. The residual voltage at an 8/20 µs impulse and 10 kA is from 113.3 to 193.2 kV. The length from the socket is about 1000 mm, the diameter 250 mm and the weight 40 kg. Size 6 covers Ur from 66 to 180 kV and Uc from 53 to 144 kV, with a residual voltage from 154 to 418 kV at 10 kA. Its length is about 1400 mm, the diameter 400 mm and the weight 88 kg.
The catalogue tables also give residual voltages at a steep-front impulse of 1/<20 µs, currents of 5–40 kA and switching impulses of 30/60 µs, as well as temporary overvoltages for 1 and 10 s. Operating temperature is from −25 to +40 °C, installation altitude up to 2000 m. IEC 60099-4 is stated for arresters in the CONNEX system, IEC 60137 for bushings and IEC 60840 / IEC 62067 for connectors. The arrester is interchangeable with other CONNEX components of the same size, so it can be put in place of a cable connector without modifying the socket.
