Description
The protective capability of the arrester is matched to the impulse strength of the equipment, taking the spatial arrangement into account. If switchgear or a transformer is connected to an overhead line through a cable section, the cable-to-overhead-line transition is also protected by suitable arresters.
The active part is built of metal-oxide resistors without spark gaps. The resistor dimensions are chosen to give high thermal stability. The resistors are enclosed in a silicone sheath that insulates them from the metal housing. The corrosion-resistant aluminium housing makes the arrester spark-proof, hermetically seals the active parts and protects personnel. The device is metal-enclosed, fully insulated, touch-protected, maintenance-free, suitable for outdoor installation and marine use, with degree of protection IP66. The arresters comply with IEC 60099-4, and the connection dimensions follow EN 50180 and EN 50181.
Sizes 1, 2 and 3 are available. The continuous operating voltage Uc is from 6 to 42 kV. The residual voltage at an 8/20 µs impulse and a current of 10 kA lies within 22–152 kV. The line discharge class is 1, with an energy capability of 2 kJ per kV Ur. The arrester withstands a high-current impulse of 65 kA (4/10 µs), a long-duration current impulse of 250 A (2 ms) and a short circuit of 16 kA for 0.2 s. An earthing conductor with a cross-section of at least 16 mm² is required. The housing length is 350, 490 or 500 mm, and the weight is from 3.5 to 5.2 kg.
When selecting, Uc must exceed the maximum voltage applied continuously to the arrester. The residual voltage must be lower than the protection level of the equipment, and temporary overvoltages lower than the TOV characteristic. In a solidly earthed network, Uc = 1.05·Us/√3 is taken, in an isolated or compensated network Uc = Us. The ratio Ur/Uc is taken as 1.25, which gives the rated voltage of the device.

Questions and answers
What equipment are MV-CONNEX plug-in surge arresters installed on?
On metal-enclosed switchgear and transformers with plug-in bushings to EN 50180 and EN 50181. The arrester is fitted directly onto the socket of the device.
What are the main parameters of the arrester?
Rated voltage Ur from 7.5 to 52.5 kV, Uc from 6 to 42 kV, nominal discharge current 10 kA. Short-circuit withstand is 16 kA for 0.2 s.
How is Uc selected for a network with an isolated neutral?
In an isolated or compensated network Uc is taken equal to Us, in a solidly earthed one 1.05·Us/√3. The ratio Ur/Uc is taken as 1.25.
