WindCube Nacelle / WindCube Scan — nacelle-mounted and scanning lidars for wind turbine testing and optimisation
WindCube Nacelle and WindCube Scan are nacelle-mounted and scanning lidars for testing and optimising operating wind turbines and wind farms. The nacelle lidar measures the incoming wind at hub height at distances of up to 700 m, and the scanning lidar studies resource and wake effects.

Description
WindCube Nacelle and WindCube Scan complement the ground-based WindCube vertical profilers. Vertical lidars work mainly at the resource assessment stage, whereas nacelle-mounted and scanning units are needed in operation, for testing and optimising operating turbines and wind farms. According to the manufacturer, more than 400 WindCube Nacelle lidars are deployed worldwide on 100+ turbine models onshore and offshore.
WindCube Nacelle is installed on the nacelle of any turbine as a standalone device. It measures the incoming wind parameters at hub height in front of the turbine. The basic Short-Range version has a range of 50–450 m and 10 configurable measurement distances, while the Long-Range version reaches 700 m and is aimed at offshore turbines. 4-beam and 2-beam modes are available. DNV, together with the company, classified WindCube Nacelle as the first nacelle lidar that meets the relevant IEC standard.
The main task of the nacelle lidar is power performance testing (PPT). Such tests are traditionally labour-intensive and expensive because they require a met mast. The lidar gives a complete picture of the wind profile with an accuracy no worse than a mast and simplifies both contractual and operational checks. An optional weather sensor adds pressure, temperature, humidity and precipitation data. The device is deployed temporarily or integrated by the turbine manufacturer.
For turbine manufacturers there is WindCube Nacelle Turbine Control. This control system receives feedforward wind information from the lidar (Lidar-assisted Control) and, according to the manufacturer, integrates easily into the designs of manufacturers and integrators. A separate area concerns the acceptance of lidar turbulence intensity measurements, for which the company offers a physically based Pure TI reconstruction in the Compass Renewable service.
WindCube Scan is used for resource assessment at complex sites, for studying wake effects between turbines and for wind farm optimisation, and in solar energy for assessing wind risks. The scanning strategies are configurable (PPI, RHI, DBS, single beam, volume, sector and VAD scans), the lidar outputs data in NetCDF format and can work in a pair with a second unit. Remote access and data processing are provided in the WindCube Insights and Compass platforms. Detailed specifications of Nacelle and Scan are provided on request.
