VIBREC500, wireless recorders of aeolian vibration and subspan oscillation of overhead line conductors

VIBREC500 are recorders from the manufacturer for measuring the movements of overhead line conductors, that is, aeolian vibration and subspan oscillation. They are used for acceptance measurements of new lines, for checking installed damping systems and for studying operating lines. The series includes the models VR500 WT, VR500 EXT and VR500 PT.

Description

Aeolian vibration inevitably occurs under the action of wind on any overhead line and can cause fatigue failure of conductor wires and other line elements. Therefore its intensity is measured with special instruments. On lines with bundled phases, after aeolian vibration and conductor galloping, the most significant are subspan oscillations. Without control they lead to the accumulation of fatigue in the spacer joints and loosening of the clamps.

VR500 WT measures the aeolian vibration of conductors and earth wires, and it combines a displacement sensor, an anemometer and a temperature sensor. VR500 EXT has a remote displacement sensor on a cable and is suitable for earth wires, thin phase conductors and measurements on compression tension clamps. VR500 PT records low-frequency subspan oscillations of large amplitude with a cable sensor with a precision potentiometer, supplemented with a temperature sensor and a propeller anemometer. In WT and EXT the displacement sensor is a sealed contact-type differential transformer LVDT of high sensitivity for micrometre displacements. The anemometer measures the wind component perpendicular to the line.

A wireless link to a ground receiver connected to a computer can be established at any time at a distance of up to 60 m. In this way the settings and operation are checked, and data is read and updated without removing the instrument from the line. Data can also be read through USB. The autonomy is about a year. The LIFE500 program controls the recorders, shows data in tables and graphs and evaluates it according to the current IEEE and CIGRE recommendations. It produces a summary report and, for the WT and EXT models, also estimates the remaining life of the conductor.

The operating temperature is from −40 to +80 °C, and the degree of protection is IP66. The housing is made of an aluminium tube 73 mm in diameter and 263 mm long, the mass is about 0.7 kg, and the power supply is a 3.6 V lithium battery of size C. The LVDT sensor travel is ±5 mm with a measuring range of ±1 mm at frequencies of 0.2–200 Hz. The PT1A sensor has a travel of ±381 mm at 0.2–10 Hz. Wind speed is measured in the range of 0–30 m/s, and the reading interval is set from 15 s to 1 h. The recorders have been tested with impulse voltage, for corona and with current up to 1500 A, and they are supplied in an aluminium case.

Questions and answers

How do the models VR500 WT, EXT and PT differ?

WT measures aeolian vibration with a built-in LVDT sensor, EXT has a remote sensor on a cable for earth wires and tension clamps. PT records subspan oscillations with a PT1A sensor with a travel of ±381 mm in the range of 0.2–10 Hz.

How is data read from a recorder on the line?

Wirelessly through a ground receiver at a distance of up to 60 m, without removing the instrument from the line. The data is processed by the LIFE500 program according to IEEE and CIGRE recommendations.

In what conditions does VIBREC500 operate?

At temperatures from −40 to +80 °C with a degree of protection of IP66. The recorders have been tested with impulse voltage, for corona and with current up to 1500 A.
