Description
TOTUS BM (Bushing Monitor) monitors the high-voltage bushings of power transformers and partial discharges in the transformer. According to the manufacturer, bushing damage is among the leading causes of transformer failures, and almost half of such failures end in an explosion or fire. Deterioration of bushing insulation is hard to notice before breakdown, because load fluctuations, weather and distributed generation create prolonged thermal stress.
The scope of monitoring is selected according to the criticality of the transformer. The system measures PD activity and high-energy discharge events, the magnitude and phase angle of the leakage current, capacitance and dielectric loss tangent (power factor), temperature and load. Growth of leakage current and a shift in capacitance appear long before breakdown. The sensor is fitted to the test tap of the bushing. It reads the bushing current and the PD signal simultaneously, so a change in capacitance and a discharge event in the same phase are correlated automatically.
Patented algorithms reject noise and separate discharges in the bushings from those in the main tank. Localisation becomes more accurate, and the risk of opening a transformer unnecessarily decreases. The proprietary PD Triangle diagram shows the presence, intensity and phase of PD in colour, and in a fleet data set transformers with active discharges are visible at once. PD trends are compared with temperature, humidity, load and DGA to find the specific failure mechanism.
In one case, an Asia-Pacific utility installed TOTUS on a 100 MVA autotransformer in 2019. After almost a week of high load, bushings A2 and C2 on the 69 kV side showed a gradual rise in power factor and a jump in PD, and the system attributed the discharges to the bushings, not to the tank. Offline tests confirmed the insulation deterioration, and both bushings were replaced as planned. The company's cases also include prevention of failures of 120 and 130 kV bushings at utilities in Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. Separately, the company analyses bushings with RIP insulation, which are more often installed at indoor substations and in horizontal mounting. In case of a defect they degrade faster than OIP bushings, so continuous monitoring is especially appropriate for them.
TOTUS BM works on its own or as part of the TOTUS platform together with the G1, G5 and G9 DGA monitors and the OLTC and through-fault current monitors. Data from all modules is combined in one interface.

Questions and answers
How many bushings does TOTUS BM monitor?
The system is designed for 3, 6 or 9 bushings. The number is chosen according to the criticality of the transformer.
Which bushing parameters are measured?
Capacitance, tan δ (power factor), the magnitude and phase angle of the leakage current, as well as PD, temperature and load.
Does the system distinguish discharges in a bushing from discharges in the tank?
Yes, patented algorithms separate these sources. In the case with the 100 MVA autotransformer, the discharges were attributed to the 69 kV bushings.
