Navigator LM / LM HV / LED + Flag overhead line fault indicators for lines up to 46/161 kV, no remote signaling
Navigator LM, LM HV and LED + Flag are electronic fault current indicators for overhead lines up to 46 kV and up to 161 kV without remote signaling. LEDs or a flag show the line patrol where the fault current has passed. The trip setting adapts to the line load automatically.
- Navigator LM, trip setting
- 200–1000 A / 100 ms, self-adjustment to 4–6× load current (from 30 A, 72 h hold)
- LED + Flag, trip setting
- ≥ 50 A / ≥ 100 ms, self-adjustment to 4× load current (from 20 A)
- Accuracy
- ±10 % at 20 °C
- Max. voltage
- LM: ≤ 46 kV; LM HV: ≤ 161 kV; LED + Flag: ≤ 46 kV (50/60 Hz)

Description
The indicators are clamped onto overhead line conductors, including live ones. The patrol crew can see on the poles which spans the fault current has passed through and finds the damaged section faster. Navigator LM is designed for overhead lines up to 46 kV, while Navigator LM HV has the same functionality and allows lines up to 161 kV. The housing is made of UV-resistant polycarbonate and polyamide and has an IP68 degree of protection.
Navigator LM continuously measures the load current and sets the trip threshold by itself at 4 to 6 times that value. Self-adjustment works at a load current from 30 A after 60 s of flow. The device keeps the maximum current in memory for at least 72 hours, so the threshold does not drop when the load decreases temporarily. The fault setting range is 200–1000 A with a 100 ms delay, with an accuracy of ±10 % at 20 °C.
After the first fault the LEDs flash evenly; after the second, for example after an unsuccessful auto-reclosing, they switch to double flashing. The ultra-bright LEDs are visible all around (360°) from more than 50 m in daylight and more than 150 m at night. The device monitors its own battery. When the remaining life falls from 500 to 50 hours of indication, a yellow LED flashes for 6 months, so a replacement can be planned in advance. Depending on the version, reset is done with a magnet, by time (4 h, optionally 2 or 8 h), or after the current is restored above 3 A or the voltage above 5 kV.
Navigator LED + Flag combines a large red mechanical flag, easy to see in daylight, with LEDs for night patrols. The setting starts from 50 A with a delay from 100 ms, and self-adjustment to 4 times the load current works from 20 A. The load value is held for 72 h, and if the load decreases, the setting is lowered after 24 h. The LEDs reset after 4 h, and the flag after 1, 2, 3 or 7 days, after the current is restored or manually. This way both permanent and transient faults are recorded on the line. The maximum line voltage for this version is 46 kV.
The devices are powered by replaceable lithium cells with a service life of at least 20 years. The indication life exceeds 500 h in the LM and 1500 h in the LED + Flag. The response to inrush current is limited so that line switching does not cause false indications.

Questions and answers
What overhead line voltage are the Navigator indicators designed for?
Navigator LM and LED + Flag are used on overhead lines up to 46 kV. Navigator LM HV allows lines up to 161 kV.
How does Navigator LM choose the trip setting?
The device measures the load current from 30 A and sets the threshold at 4 to 6 times that value. The maximum is stored for at least 72 hours, and the setting range is 200–1000 A.
From what distance is the indication visible?
The LEDs are visible all around (360°) from more than 50 m in daylight and more than 150 m at night. The LED + Flag also shows a red flag in daylight.
