Earth 4.0 / Earth Zero / Earth Zero Flag earth fault indicators with a sum current sensor

Earth 4.0, Earth Zero and Earth Zero Flag are earth fault indicators for medium voltage cable networks with a sum current sensor. They detect the earth fault current, show the trip on site with an LED or a flag, and send a signal to the telecontrol system through relay contacts.

Description

The Earth 4.0, Earth Zero and Earth Zero Flag indicators work in medium voltage cable distribution networks alongside short circuit indicators. They are installed where earth faults must be monitored separately, for example in networks with low-resistance neutral earthing. Typical installation places are switchgear cells and transformer substations. They are used by grid companies that need to find a damaged cable section faster.

The device responds to the sum current of the three conductors. A wired sum current sensor encloses the cable, and the signal is processed by the electronics of the indicator unit. For shielded and earthed cables the manufacturer offers a sum current transformer for diameters up to 130 mm. When the trip criteria are met, a red LED flashes, in the flag versions a mechanical indicator also drops, and the remote signaling contacts close.

Earth 4.0 has earth fault current settings of 25, 50, 60 and 80 A (others on request), a delay of 80 or 160 ms and a tolerance of ±10 %. The indication is dual, by LED and by flag. A yellow battery status LED flashes with a 2 s period and gives early warning of the end of life of the lithium cell, which is rated for at least 20 years. Two changeover relay contacts transmit the earth fault signal, and one more contact reports the battery status. The contact load is up to 230 V AC / 1 A or 220 V DC / 1 A. Test and reset are also performed through the relay contacts, so the indicator is easy to connect to the telecontrol system.

Earth Zero and Earth Zero Flag are designed for settings of 25, 50, 75 and 100 A with a delay of 80 or 160 ms and a tolerance of ±15 %. Earth Zero shows the trip with an LED, and Earth Zero Flag adds a mechanical flag. Both have a test and reset button and a remote signaling contact. A remote ESL2 signal lamp can be connected to them, so the duty operator sees the trip without entering the substation. The lamps are supplied with a connecting cable 5, 10 or 15 m long. For installation outside the cell there are wall-mounted enclosures from the manufacturer; in the usual case the indicator is installed in a built-in enclosure.

Questions and answers

What earth fault current settings does Earth 4.0 have?

Earth 4.0 can be set to 25, 50, 60 or 80 A with a delay of 80 or 160 ms and a tolerance of ±10 %. Other setting values are made by the manufacturer on request.

How does Earth Zero differ from Earth Zero Flag?

Both have settings of 25, 50, 75 and 100 A and a tolerance of ±15 %. Earth Zero indicates a trip only with an LED, while Earth Zero Flag also uses a mechanical flag.

What cables is the sum current transformer suitable for?

It is installed on shielded and earthed cables with a diameter of up to 130 mm. The transformer encloses all three phases, so the indicator responds specifically to the earth fault current.
