8VN1 Blue GIS — 145 kV GIS with vacuum circuit breakers and clean air insulation
8VN1 Blue GIS is gas-insulated switchgear for 145 kV, completely free of SF6 and other fluorinated gases. The arc is extinguished by vacuum circuit breakers, and the live parts are insulated by clean air. The switchgear is installed at 110–150 kV substations of grid companies, at industrial substations, wind farm substations and in cold climates.

Description
The insulating medium consists of 80 % nitrogen and 20 % oxygen, purified and dried, with zero global warming potential. The switchgear is built on a modular component platform and combines vacuum switching with the compactness of GIS. There are no toxic gases or decomposition products. Therefore transportation, operation and maintenance require no special training, gas density monitoring, emission accounting or gas disposal. The vacuum interrupter is hermetically sealed for the whole service life and is maintenance-free.
The rated voltage is up to 145 kV at 50/60 Hz. The power-frequency test voltage is 275 kV and the lightning impulse 650 kV. The rated current of busbars, feeders and bus-section bays reaches 3150 A. The breaking and short-time withstand current is up to 50 kA for 3 s, and the peak withstand current 135 kA. The breaker with a spring-operated mechanism works in the cycles O-0.3 s-CO-3 min-CO and CO-15 s-CO.
The filling pressure is 0.8 MPa (abs.), and leakage is below 0.1 % per year per compartment. The bay with a common pole mechanism is 1000 mm wide. A standard bay with conventional current transformers weighs about 6 t, has a height and depth of 3.2/5.5 m and operates at −50…+55 °C. With low-power instrument transformers LPIT the bay is shorter (3.1/3.7 m) and lighter (4.7 t) and is rated for −30…+55 °C.
The switchgear can be installed indoors and outdoors. The first overhaul is carried out no earlier than after 25 years, and the service life is over 50 years. Among completed projects is the first fully SF6-free 110 kV substation at the Feralpi steelworks. The switchgear complies with IEC and IEEE standards.
The company has been developing vacuum switching technology for over 40 years in medium voltage, and has been developing high-voltage applications since 2012. The driver of the transition was EU legislation, which restricts fluorinated gases and permits only solutions with GWP < 1 where they are available. For a grid company this means less paperwork and simpler substation operation.

Questions and answers
Is the 8VN1 suitable for 110 kV substations?
Yes, the switchgear is rated for voltages up to 145 kV and is used at 110–150 kV substations. The first fully SF6-free 110 kV substation at the Feralpi plant was built on the 8VN1.
What currents does the 8VN1 Blue GIS withstand?
The rated current of busbars and feeders is up to 3150 A, and the breaking current is up to 50 kA for 3 s. The peak withstand current is 135 kA.
How does a bay with LPIT differ from a standard one?
A bay with LPIT measures 3.1/3.7 m and weighs 4.7 t, against 3.2/5.5 m and about 6 t for a standard one. Its temperature range is −30…+55 °C instead of −50…+55 °C.
