Description
PowerSub is a custom packaged substation created on the basis of the group's experience in engineered solutions. It is fully assembled and tested at the factory and arrives on site ready to install, so practically no maintenance is required. The aim is to deliver critically important power quickly where it is needed: to healthcare sites, EV charging hubs, renewables sites, and industrial and commercial sites. The substation is used in regulated and unregulated networks, in infrastructure and in transport.
The composition is defined by the project. The switchgear is selected to the customer's specification, and the transformer has oil or ester filling as the customer requires. All of this stands in a prefabricated container together with a protection, control and condition monitoring panel. A range of rating options is available. In EV PowerSub, according to the manufacturer, 36–12 kV switchgear is used, namely two 12 kV 630 A units and one 1250 A unit of the Quantum / Eclipse series, as well as a 36/12 kV transformer rated from 7.5 to 20 MVA with ester fluid filling.
The specialised EV PowerSub version is developed as a compact plug and play assembly for fast grid reinforcement near motorway charging stations. It was created together with a major British distribution network operator. According to the manufacturer, the advantages are as follows. A shorter construction cycle, minimal civil works (less concrete and other materials), savings of time and resources, no SF₆ in line with EU regulations, suitability for renewables and reverse power flow, backup supply in case of outages, support throughout the whole lifecycle, and convenience on sites with limited space.
All switchgear has internal arc testing to IEC 62271-200, and the switchgear and transformers have passed type tests to IEC standards. The finished substation is additionally checked at the factory to reduce site risks to a minimum. The manufacturer's management system is certified by AFNOR UK for the design, manufacture, installation and service of medium-voltage switchgear, namely indoor up to 15 kV, outdoor up to 38 kV, packaged substations, and DC traction switchgear up to 3 kV. The company also holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certificates. The switchgear is manufactured in Blackwood (South Wales). The key technology is a patented magnetic actuator based on a solenoid with permanent magnet latching, which has received industry awards and requires no maintenance.
