CRYNO is 12 kV indoor air-insulated switchgear with vacuum circuit breakers and a magnetic actuator, free of SF₆. Rated currents are 630, 1250 and 2000 A, with a short-circuit breaking current of 25 kA. The CRYNO AFLR version has the IAC AFLR 25 kA 1 s internal arc classification.

Description
CRYNO is the newest medium-voltage switchgear: a fixed-type, metal-enclosed, indoor 12 kV unit with air insulation and vacuum circuit breakers, completely free of SF₆ gas. The name is Welsh for compact and reflects both the main property of the product and its origin, since it is made in Wales. CRYNO combines the functionality of the time-proven Eclipse and Quantum switchgear with a new actuator technology. The breakers are fitted with an award-winning magnetic actuator, and the compact design improves personnel safety and simplifies maintenance.
Technical data: rated voltage 12 kV, frequency 50 Hz, rated currents 630, 1250 and 2000 A (2000 A in preparation, without auto-reclosing), busbars up to 2000 A, BIL 95 kV, one-minute test voltage 38 kV, short-time withstand current 25 kA for 3 s, making current 62.5 kA, short-circuit breaking current 25 kA, single capacitor bank breaking current 400 A. Breaker classes E2, S1, C2, mechanical endurance M2, 10,000 operations.
Internal arc classification AF/AFL (optional) 25 kA for 1 s, degree of protection IP4X, control supply 110 V DC, panel weight 500–700 kg. Operating conditions: from −5 to +40 °C, humidity up to 95 %, altitude up to 1000 m. Panel width 500 mm. The busbar arrangement allows extension at both ends of the switchgear, and extension of existing Eclipse and Quantum switchgear is supported.
CRYNO AFLR extends the range for critical sites. With the same rated parameters, the switchgear has the internal arc classification IAC AFLR 25 kA for 1 s, with personnel protection on all four sides. The AFLR configuration directs gases and debris away from personnel in accordance with BS EN 62271-200 ANNEX A, which limits damage to adjacent panels and reduces design risks.
It is used in distribution networks, data centres, renewables, industry and infrastructure. For the extension of the switchgear at Lancaster University, five 11 kV CRYNO panels were installed next to an existing nine-panel unit that distributes power to a new solar park and energy centre. The predecessor Quantum is no longer supplied but is still serviced. The switchgear is manufactured in Blackwood (South Wales). The key technology is a patented solenoid-based magnetic actuator with permanent magnet latching, which has received industry awards and requires no maintenance.
