ESS / ESP / ESU / ESG – oil-filled cable terminations for outdoor use, transformers and GIS, 72.5–550 kV
The oil-filled terminations ESS, ESP, ESU and ESG are rated for voltages of 72.5–550 kV. They are installed outdoors in substations and on overhead line towers, and are also used to lead a cable into a transformer or GIS. All terminations are suitable for cables with cross-linked polyethylene and EPR insulation and copper or aluminium conductors.

Description
The self-supporting ESS termination for voltages up to 550 kV is made with composite technology. Mechanical strength comes from a fibreglass tube with silicone sheds, filled with an oil-based insulating medium. The conductor connector is easy to install and seals the termination for its entire service life without maintenance. Creepage distance depends on the version, from 2340 mm in ESS72 to 22 000 mm in ESS550-C220.
The self-supporting ESP termination has porcelain sheds and is likewise rated for voltages up to 550 kV. According to the manufacturer, porcelain is valued in a number of regions of the world as a proven, durable material. The silicone field grading element in ESP is the same as in ESS, and the creepage distance is 2248–19 600 mm. Both terminations withstand a lightning impulse from 325 to 1550 kV and accept conductors with a cross-section of 95–2500 mm². The pollution class is mostly IV/e to IEC 60815-3, for ESS300 III/d. Options include a splice box, a partial discharge sensor, an arcing horn and a shield ring.
The ESU termination for 72.5–245 kV is used to lead a cable into oil-insulated transformers, and the ESG termination for 72.5–300 kV to lead it into GIS. A cast-resin housing filled with insulating oil surrounds a push-on silicone cone and separates the interior of the equipment from the cable system. Both terminations are made in vertical and horizontal versions, and the horizontal one is supplied with an expansion tank and piping. Connection dimensions comply with EN 50299-1 for transformers and IEC 62271-209 for GIS, and the installation length is from 583 to 960 mm. An adapter plate and a shielding electrode are available as options.
The standard contact system is built on SICON bolts, crimping is available on request, and for enamelled copper wire conductors the FrontCon system. Each termination undergoes routine tests before shipment. For laboratory and field tests and other temporary uses, the manufacturer offers a mobile stand with a universal mounting plate for DOC, EST, ESS and ESP terminations up to 300 kV.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between ESS and ESP terminations?
ESS has a composite insulator made of a fibreglass tube with silicone sheds, ESP is porcelain. Both are rated for voltages up to 550 kV and a lightning impulse from 325 to 1550 kV.
Which termination is needed to lead a cable into a transformer?
For oil-insulated transformers the ESU termination for 72.5–245 kV is intended, with connection dimensions to EN 50299-1. The installation length is from 583 to 960 mm.
Which termination is used to lead a cable into GIS?
For GIS the ESG termination for 72.5–300 kV is made, with connection dimensions to IEC 62271-209. Vertical and horizontal versions are available.
