CONNEX – plug-in gas-insulated and epoxy cable joints and rapid-deployment systems, 72.5–550 kV

CONNEX plug-in joints rated 72.5–550 kV connect, extend and switch HV and EHV cable lines. On their basis the manufacturer builds rapid-deployment cable systems for repairs, tests and temporary supply. CONNEX cable connectors, bushings and blanking plugs are inserted into the joint, and they can be disconnected and replaced at any time.

Description

Each joint connects cables of different types and cross-sections with cross-linked polyethylene or EPR insulation. A high degree of pre-assembly shortens installation, for example when assembling offshore wind farms and platforms.

Gas-insulated joints are filled with traditional or alternative gas and come in three forms. The straight joint for 72.5–550 kV connects two cable sections, including ones of different cross-section, and serves as a voltage-resistant end element during cable testing. The T-joint up to 245 kV branches one or two smaller-section cables off a single cable, and the free position is closed with a blanking plug. The angled joint up to 245 kV has two connections at a right angle and takes up less space. With a vertically installed CONNEX bushing it becomes a mobile arrangement for temporary supply of equipment from an overhead line during repairs and for testing. The joints are metal-enclosed, fully insulated, and have a bursting diaphragm and a gas density sensor with remote monitoring. Rated current is 2500 or 4000 A, lightning impulse from 325 to 1550 kV.

Epoxy CONNEX joints for 72.5 and 170 kV with solid insulation are rated for 2500 A. They are installed outdoors, indoors and offshore, and a version for laying in the ground also exists. The joints are compact, touch-protected, withstand flooding, ultraviolet and a salt atmosphere, are maintenance-free and explosion-proof. For marine use they are certified by DNV GL. According to the manufacturer, cast joints are up to two thirds lighter than sulphur hexafluoride ones.

Rapid-deployment systems have three levels. Basic ones consist of terminations on cables, including a flexible rubber cable on a pneumatically driven drum. Extended ones add straight joints to them. Comprehensive ones include a universal repair kit, a universal routing kit and systems for mobile transformers and substations. The repair kit arrives in marked, weatherproof containers and after the repair stays in the line permanently. Projects named in the catalogue include the East Anglia ONE wind farm with a 66 kV network for 102 wind turbines and the DolWin gamma converter station with a 155 kV flexible cable.
