CONNEX – plug-in cable connectors and inner-cone sockets for transformers and GIS, 72.5–550 kV
CONNEX is a system of dry plug-in cable connections on the inner-cone principle for transformers and GIS rated 72.5–550 kV and currents up to 4000 A. The manufacturer calls it the world's first plug-in cable system of this type. The socket is built into the equipment at the factory, and on site only the cable connector is inserted, with no work involving oil or gas.

Description
The system is based on the CONNEX socket, built into a transformer or GIS, and the plug-in cable connector. The socket is installed at the factory in any position. For this reason the equipment passes full factory tests and travels to site closed. The CONNEX family is constantly developing and covers voltages from medium to extra-high.
The cable connector is configured for any cable with cross-linked polyethylene or EPR insulation. After the cable is prepared, it is inserted into the socket, and if necessary can be disconnected at any time and moved to other equipment, CONNEX joints or an outdoor CONNEX termination. The insulating body of LSR silicone rubber, in a special version with RTV, has a conical shape matching the inner cone of the socket. A spring at the base maintains constant contact pressure when the cable expands from heating. The electric field is controlled by deflectors. A rotating bell-shaped flange allows the connector to be mounted without twisting the cable, and the screen is connected with a SMART clamp. The connection is touch-protected, withstands flooding and is maintenance-free. Certified marine versions and versions for low temperatures are available.
The range includes sizes 4 to 9 for highest operating voltages from 72.5 to 550 kV. Sizes 4–6-S are rated for 2500 A, sizes 7–9 for 4000 A and copper or aluminium cables with a cross-section of up to 3000 mm². The diameter over insulation reaches 131 mm in the 300/362 kV class and 144 mm in the 420/550 kV class. In the EHV version, a cable fixing system is integrated in the connector, which relieves the contact system of the mechanical load from the cable.
Sockets for transformers comply with EN 50299-1 and EN 50299-2, for GIS with IEC 62271-209. If the cable compartment does not have to comply with a standard, sockets are made in a more compact version. All sockets have an earthed voltage tap, and with vertical mounting also a vent valve. EHV components are tested to IEC 62067, and every product undergoes routine tests. Solid-insulated blanking plugs and gas blind covers for testing, plugs for current tests, earthing and short-circuiting devices, cable fixing clamps, protective caps and discs, and mounting and earthing caps are supplied with the system. Installation is carried out only by personnel trained and certified by the manufacturer.
