ESF / EST / EST-SUB / EST-SUB SA / DOC – dry outdoor cable terminations 52–170 kV
Dry outdoor terminations rated 52–170 kV connect high-voltage cables to overhead lines and busbars in substations and on overhead line towers. The insulation is exclusively solid silicone, with no oil, gas or gel. The terminations are lighter than oil-filled ones, do not leak and are explosion-proof.

Description
Installation uses the push-on technique, and there is no work with liquid or gaseous insulating media. Silicone sheds repel water and dirt, so the terminations are maintenance-free. They are simpler and faster to transport and install than conventional oil-filled ones.
The line includes several versions. The flexible ESF termination for 52–170 kV fits into existing and new support structures. It can be pre-installed on test and temporary cables without a base plate and used repeatedly. The post termination EST for 123–170 kV is installed on overhead line towers. It is assembled on the ground and lifted onto the tower together with the cable without scaffolding, so line outages are shorter. EST-SUB for substations and gantries is likewise mounted on the cable on the ground and lifted onto a support structure up to 6 m high. EST-SUB SA combines the termination with an integrated dry surge arrester for solidly earthed and compensated networks, the arrester serving here as the load-bearing element. The termination and the arrester are mounted independently. The self-supporting DOC termination arrives with a pre-assembled central unit made of a hollow insulator, a field grading element and a base plate. It is simply pushed onto the cable without bonding sections, and the earthing point is integrated.
Highest operating voltage is 52–170 kV, lightning impulse up to 750 kV, conductor cross-sections 95–2500 mm². The terminations are made for pollution classes III/d and IV/e to IEC 60815-3. The integrated EST-SUB SA arrester has a rated voltage of 54–228 kV in steps of 3 kV, a discharge current of 10 or 20 kA and line discharge class 3 or 4. In DOC the partial discharge level at 1.5·U0 does not exceed 5 pC, and each termination is tested complete to IEC 60840, clause 9.
The standard conductor connector comes with SICON bolts, on request crimped, and for enamelled wire conductors with FrontCon. Options include a splice box and a partial discharge sensor, and for DOC also an arcing horn and a shield ring. Retrofit variants for 123–170 kV replace old terminations on cables with cross-linked polyethylene or EPR of 300–2500 mm² cross-section, while the cable itself stays.

Questions and answers
Which termination should be chosen for a 145 kV overhead line tower?
The post termination EST for 123–170 kV is intended for overhead line towers. It is assembled on the ground and lifted onto the tower together with the cable without scaffolding.
Is there a termination with an integrated surge arrester?
Yes, EST-SUB SA has an integrated dry surge arrester with a rated voltage of 54–228 kV and a discharge current of 10 or 20 kA. It is designed for solidly earthed and compensated networks.
Can an old oil-filled termination be replaced without replacing the cable?
Yes, Retrofit variants for 123–170 kV are installed on existing cables with cross-linked polyethylene or EPR of 300–2500 mm² cross-section. Tests are carried out to IEC 60840.
