IXOSIL MSA – push-on straight joints for HV and EHV cables, 72.5–550 kV
IXOSIL MSA are push-on straight joints for permanent connection of HV and EHV cables rated 72.5–550 kV with cross-linked polyethylene and EPR insulation. They join cables of the same and of different types with copper or aluminium conductors. According to the manufacturer, the joints have been in service for many years around the world in substations, offshore projects and urban underground cable lines.

Description
Among the installations with MSA joints, the manufacturer names lines in deserts with large temperature swings and directly buried cables in soil with a high groundwater level. The joint is water-resistant, so both cases are standard for it. The voltage range is continuous, from 72.5 kV through 123, 145, 170, 245, 300 and 420 kV to 550 kV, and at each level there are versions with different screening, with or without an earthing cable or a screen connection cable.
The basis of the joint is a pre-assembled and tested silicone body. Every joint is checked before delivery, and installation on site becomes simpler. The one-piece dry design and the proven push-on technique shorten installation time. According to the manufacturer, a high-quality, professionally installed joint lasts as long as the cable itself. The conductors are joined with SICON bolted connectors or conventional crimp sleeves, and combinations of different conductor materials and screening systems are possible. The diameter over prepared cable insulation lies within 37–131 mm, so one family covers cables from the smallest HV cross-sections to the largest EHV ones.
The joints are made for conductor cross-sections of 150–2500 mm² and screen connection cable cross-sections of up to 630 mm². Lightning impulse is from 325 to 1550 kV, and the partial discharge level is below 5 pC. For different earthing schemes there are four screen treatment options. DO means a screen through-connection, DE a through-connection with one connection cable, XK a screen break with one concentric cable, XL a break with two cables for screen transposition. The outer housing is heat-shrink, fibreglass-reinforced heat-shrink, PE/PP or copper, and the inner one is metal or aluminium foil. The designation of a variant is composed from these codes, for example MSA 123-XKMG or MSA 420-550-DEMG.
In versions with a plastic housing, a bayonet lock with anti-rotation protection is fixed by turning through 30°, without over-compressing the seal. Splice boxes for joining optical cables, together with installation tools, can be ordered with the joints. Tests were carried out to IEC 60840, IEC 62067 and a British standard. For screen cross-bonding and earthing, the manufacturer supplies suitable LINKBOX terminal boxes with the joints.
