Description
The insulating part is made of thermally toughened glass and joined to a metal cap and pin. The insulators are assembled into strings through coupling fittings, including those the company makes itself, that is shackles, eye links, yokes and protective fittings. The company developed the range as an extension of its own production of insulators for overhead lines. Glass discs complement the company's porcelain and composite insulators, so several insulation options can be compared for one line. Discs are connected in series, and the number of insulators in a string determines the voltage class of the line. Suspension strings hold the conductor on intermediate poles, strain strings take the conductor tension on anchor poles.
The profile is chosen for the pollution level along the route. The programme includes the traditional plain and anti-fog profiles, each for its own pollution level. The aerodynamic profile is traditionally used in desert areas, where the insulator must accumulate as little sand and dust as possible. Creepage distance and electrical characteristics are determined on request for the voltage class and pollution degree.
The insulators operate on transmission and distribution AC overhead lines, on new lines and during reconstruction and reconductoring of existing ones. For a National Grid reconductoring project in the UK the company supplied glass insulators for 400 kV strain strings and anti-fog 300 kN suspension insulators. The in-house design office assembles strings for specific conductor systems and pole designs, from lattice steel towers to non-standard structures.
Finished insulators and strings undergo type and sample mechanical and electrical tests in the factory laboratory. Mechanics are checked on 500 and 1000 kN tension machines, electrical parameters in the high-voltage laboratory, and coupling dimensions with BS, IEC and ANSI gauges. Production and laboratory operate under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems, and the occupational health and safety system is aligned with ISO 45001. The factory is in Tunstall, Staffordshire. Today the company is part of a Swedish group and supplies insulators to customers in the UK and abroad. The insulator size is selected on request together with the creepage distance and the number of discs in a string.

Questions and answers
What voltage and loads are the glass insulators designed for?
For overhead lines up to 400 kV and mechanical loads up to 400 kN. For National Grid, insulators for 400 kV strain strings and anti-fog 300 kN suspension insulators were supplied.
Which disc profiles are available?
Standard plain, anti-fog and aerodynamic. The aerodynamic profile is traditionally used in desert areas.
Can a complete string be obtained?
Yes, the company supplies strings together with its own coupling fittings for a specific conductor system and pole type. Mechanical tests are carried out on 500 and 1000 kN machines.
