STO / ST, Stockbridge vibration dampers for conductors, earth wires and OPGW, Ø 7–39 mm
The Stockbridge vibration dampers of the manufacturer limit the aeolian vibration of conductors, overhead earth wires and OPGW optical cables of overhead lines. The bolted STO types are designed for conductors of 7.06–26.81 mm, and the ST dampers with spiral attachment for 7–39 mm. They are installed on OPGW, AAAC, ACSR and other conductors.

Description
Fatigue failures of wires caused by wind vibration have been recorded by engineers since the beginning of the last century. In 1924 George Stockbridge proposed an inertial energy absorber made of a steel cable with two weights. Since then the design has been improved many times and, in the manufacturer's assessment, a damper of this type is still the best, technically and economically, at keeping conductor vibration within safe limits. The company states that it has taken part in the development of the Stockbridge damper for the last 50 years. Its products are installed all over the world and have been proven in severe climatic conditions.
The dampers are designed so that the smallest number of devices keeps the aeolian vibration of each span within internationally accepted limits. The damping capacity is retained over the whole temperature range and the entire service life of the line, and no maintenance is needed. On phase conductors the damper does not produce corona at the maximum line voltage. It can be installed and removed on a live line. The clamp holds the conductor, counteracting the loosening effect of vibration, and the parts are secured against self-loosening.
The attachment is bolted or spiral. The bolted STO 715, STO 1520 and STO 2027 cover conductors with a diameter from 7.06 to 26.81 mm, where STO 715 suits 7.06–14.37 mm, STO 1520 suits 14.38–20.28 mm and STO 2027 suits 20.29–26.81 mm. The dampers with spiral attachment ST 715, ST 1523, ST 2331 and ST 3139 are designed for diameters from 7 to 39 mm. The clamp is cast from aluminium alloy, the bolt, nut and washer are of galvanised steel, and the locking plate is of stainless steel. The counterweights and the messenger cable are made of galvanised steel, the spirals of aluminium-clad steel. On request a stainless steel messenger cable, shear head bolts, stainless steel bolts or a combination of them are fitted.
The company calculates the vibration damping and selects the system for a specific project at the proposal stage. The parameters are confirmed by type tests, quality control is carried out in production, and clear installation instructions are supplied with the delivery. Tests are carried out in the company's own laboratory and on field spans, and the vibration on an operating line is measured with recorders of its own design.
