Spacer Dampers, spacer dampers for bundled phases of overhead lines (2, 3, 4 conductors), 63 kA
The spacer dampers of the manufacturer protect the bundled phases of high-voltage overhead lines from wind-induced oscillations. The catalogue covers phases of two, three and four conductors with a spacing of 400–600 mm between conductors, and for UHV there is a six-conductor version. The spacers withstand a short-circuit current of at least 63 kA for 1 s.
- Phase configurations
- 2, 3, 4 conductors (catalogue); 6 conductors for UHV
- Spacing between conductors
- 400 / 450 / 457 / 500 / 600 mm
- Conductor diameter (nut cracker)
- 16.0–50.0 mm
- Conductor diameter (cantilever)
- 16.4–41.1 mm

Description
On high-voltage overhead lines, the electrical requirements call for a phase made of several conductors, and the distance between them is kept by spacers. If elastic and damping elements are introduced into the spacer, the damping effect is distributed along the span. The vibration is not trapped between adjacent spacers, and the bending stresses near the clamps are reduced. According to the manufacturer, the company has developed spacer dampers since 1980, and in current products the inertial and elastic damping properties are precisely matched to each other.
The spacer keeps the design distance between conductors and limits aeolian vibration and subspan oscillation within internationally recognised limits. The mechanical, elastic and damping properties are retained over the whole temperature range and the entire service life of the line, and no maintenance is needed. The conductors can move in any direction without damage to parts and wires. The corona extinction voltage is high, and the short-circuit current withstand is at least 63 kA for 1 s.
There are two types of clamps. The boltless nut cracker with a rubber insert is fixed with a quarter-turn latch using an installation tool. The cantilever is fixed with a bolt tightened with a calibrated torque wrench, and the bolts have disc washers and locking plates. The clamps are made as light as possible so that they remain mobile at high vibration frequencies and do not create nodes on the conductor. The body and clamps are die-cast from aluminium alloy. The distance between conductors is 400, 450, 457, 500 or 600 mm, and the conductor diameter is 16.0–50.0 mm for the nut cracker and 16.4–41.1 mm for the cantilever. Shear bolt heads and stainless steel bolts are supplied as options.
The type, number and placement of the dampers are selected by the company by analytical calculation based on energy balance. The company's own laboratory for testing dampers and conductor self-damping has been in operation since 1979, and in 2002 it was upgraded for mechanical type tests to IEC 61854. The company's developments include the double-frame spacer (2001), the spacer for six-conductor UHV phases (2006) and the high-temperature boltless clamp (2016). On an installed line the operation of the damping system is checked with VIBREC500 recorders.
