Gen 2 — polymer line post insulators for 15–46 kV and 46–69 kV distribution lines (Universal Trunnion)

Gen 2 polymer line post insulators are designed for distribution and subtransmission lines of the 15–46 kV and 46–69 kV classes. The design has an epoxy fiberglass core, a silicone sheath and a PST sealing system without RTV coating. The universal trunnion replaces separate trunnion clamps and ties.

Description

Second generation (Gen 2) polymer line post insulators are designed for distribution and subtransmission lines. The Gen 2 15–46 kV family covers horizontal and vertical insulators of the 10 series and insulators of the 20 series with an F-neck. The Gen 2 46–69 kV family is a new development of line post insulators for the 46–69 kV classes. The insulators were designed and tested to meet ANSI C29.18 and CSA C411.6.

The manufacturing technology proven on transmission insulators is used: an epoxy fiberglass core, a silicone sheath with enhanced hydrophobicity and a PST (primary, secondary, tertiary) watertight sealing system without RTV coating. The end fitting is crimped onto the core under pressure. The insulators are supplied with a ¾″-10 stud or with an aluminum gain base. For the line side there are aluminum end fittings with a universal trunnion, drop tongue and F-neck, and a tin-plated hardware option is also offered.

The universal trunnion is a single part for any application and replaces separate trunnion clamps and ties. The conductor range is adjustable within 0.2–1.3″ (5.1–34 mm) with one bolt, hot-stick operation is possible, and the wide jaw accommodates large line angles.

The rated tensile load STL is 5000 lb (22.2 kN), the cantilever SCL is 2800 lb (12.5 kN) and the working cantilever MDCL is 1350 lb (6.0 kN). For example, the universal insulator of the 15 kV class has a creepage distance of 12.2″ (310 mm) with a weight of 3.6 kg, the 35 kV class 24.4″ (620 mm) and the 46 kV class 31.4″ (798 mm). The F-neck insulator of the 69 kV class has a creepage distance of 51.5″ (1308 mm) with a weight of 8.0 kg. Gen 2 1.75″ insulators are also produced.

In the catalog number, code 40 denotes a ¾″ stud, 42 a ⅞″ stud and 90 a gain base. The line end fitting is coded UO (universal), 20 (horizontal trunnion), 60 (vertical trunnion) and 70 (F-neck). Some options may be limited by the core diameter.
