HVIB, polymer high-voltage insulators for rolling stock of 1.5/3 kV DC and 15/25 kV AC

HVIB (High Voltage Insulator Bushing) are polymer high-voltage insulators for locomotives, multiple units and high-speed electric trains of 1.5 and 3 kV DC and 15 and 25 kV AC. They support pantographs, roof equipment busbars and other high-voltage apparatus. Compared with ceramic insulators they are lighter, withstand impacts better and need no maintenance.

Description

The HVIB line was created specifically for railways. The insulator stands on the roof of an electric locomotive or train car, where it is constantly subjected to vibration, shocks from the track, temperature changes, moisture and pollution. The insulators are produced for four voltage classes common on electrified lines: 1.5 and 3 kV direct current and 15 and 25 kV alternating current.

The insulator core is polymer or fibreglass, proven in service. The outer sheath is made of high-voltage polyolefin, the end fittings of aluminium or steel, and special versions are possible on request. For pneumatic pantographs, air-feed insulators are produced. The spirally wound air lines in them are enclosed in high-voltage insulating material, which forms a long internal creepage path sealed from moisture.

A typical 25 kV post insulator withstands a power-frequency 50 Hz test voltage of over 75 kV and an impulse voltage of over 170 kV. Its height is 300–400 mm, diameter 40–80 mm, arcing distance 350–450 mm and creepage distance 650–1000 mm. The working bending and tensile load reaches 10 kN, and the mass is 5.5 kg. The insulator operates at temperatures from −40 to +80 °C.

A number of designs comply with the fire safety requirements of EN 45545-2. The insulators are tested for shock and vibration to EN 61373, and they also pass electrical, mechanical and climatic qualification tests to the main railway standards. On high-speed trains the service life of such insulators exceeds 20 years.

The manufacturer offers standard designs and develops insulators for new trains and for modernisation of existing fleets. The modular design simplifies production of small batches, and batch numbering gives traceability of each product. For selection, the voltage class, the apparatus carried by the insulator, the mechanical load and the required creepage distance are taken into account. When rolling stock is modernised, polymer insulators are installed in place of ceramic ones, and the work of maintaining roof insulation during scheduled repairs is reduced.
