GridCore and Intelli-Pole — composite (FRP) poles for distribution lines

GridCore and Intelli-Pole are composite distribution poles made of fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP), replacing wood, steel and concrete poles. GridCore has a solid pultruded structure, while Intelli-Pole is assembled from sections. The expected service life is up to 80 years.

Description

Composite fibreglass (FRP) poles are a high-strength, environmentally resistant alternative to wood, steel and concrete poles for distribution lines. Engineered materials increase the network's resistance to natural events and extend the service life of lines. The poles are processed and assembled in the USA. They are produced straight or tapered, with or without drilled holes as required, and are supplied complete with all the hardware needed for installation.

GridCore is a solid pultruded pole of constant diameter. The expected service life is up to 80 years, considerably more than wood. The low weight allows work with lighter equipment, which is easier for crews. The material is not subject to corrosion, damage by woodpeckers and insects, or weathering. The solid construction excludes on-site assembly and gives uniform properties. Maintenance is limited to visual inspections, and surface damage is repaired on site.

For 40 ft poles of 14″ diameter, classes C4, C3, C2 and C1 are rated for design loads of 2400, 3000, 3700 and 4500 lb with a weight of 707 lb, and classes H1, H2 and H3 for 5400, 6400 and 7500 lb with a weight of 1041 lb. The catalogue gives deflections under design load and sizes of 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 ft and longer. The manufacturer's drawings give a weight of 708 lb for C4 at 40 ft and 1040 lb for H1, so it is better to take values from the drawing in calculations.

Intelli-Pole is a pole for the most demanding conditions. The sectional design allows the pole to be assembled and installed even in hard-to-reach areas without heavy equipment. Sections weigh 140–280 lb, interlocking machined joints simplify assembly and disassembly, and compact packing saves storage space and simplifies transport. UV protection is integrated into the material structure. Poles of 45 ft are available without drilling and with holes for steps.

A selection guide, installation instructions and typical configuration drawings are offered. These cover a single narrow-profile pole, a pole with a crossarm, and a three-phase branch assembly.

Questions and answers

Which load classes and lengths do GridCore poles have?

For a 40 ft length and 14″ diameter, classes C4–C1 are rated for 2400–4500 lb and classes H1–H3 for 5400–7500 lb. Per the catalogue, lengths run from 40 to 65 ft and longer.

What is the expected service life of composite poles?

Up to 80 years, which is considerably more than wood poles. The material is not subject to corrosion, damage by woodpeckers and insects, or weathering.

How are Intelli-Pole sectional poles assembled?

The sections weighing 140–280 lb are joined with interlocking machined joints, so the pole is assembled and installed without heavy equipment, even in hard-to-reach areas. Poles of 45 ft are available without drilling and with holes for steps.
