Description
Guy strain insulators create electrical separation between the pole and the guy wire and prevent a hazardous potential from appearing on the grounded part of the guy in the event of a flashover or a conductor break. They are available in a wide range of lengths and mechanical loads and are used on distribution and transmission line poles.
The load-bearing element is a fiberglass rod, with end fittings of hot-dip galvanized malleable iron in clevis and tongue versions. Several options protect the rod from ultraviolet radiation: veiled fiberglass, painting and a silicone coating. The silicone coating (index -SC) is recommended for harsh conditions, as it provides UV protection in any environment and application.
The minimum breaking loads are 15,000, 21,000, 30,000, 36,000, 50,000 and 80,000 lb. The 15,000 lb series (GCC15, GCTE15) is supplied in lengths from 12 to 144″. The GCC50 series (50,000 lb) has lengths from 18 to 144″, a clevis slot of 15/16″ and a ¾″ diameter cotter pin, with an overall length between attachment points of 32 to 158″. The GCC80 is designed for maximum loads. On the GCC50 and GCC80 the rod is covered with silicone rubber. On the GCC80 the minimum breaking load is 80,000 lb and the cotter pin diameter is 1″. Electrical separation is needed so that the grounded part of the guy is not left energized. The malleable iron end fittings are protected from corrosion by hot-dip galvanizing. The length and type of end fitting are selected from the catalog matrix, which simplifies choosing for a specific guy.
A catalog configurator for guy insulators helps select the length, end fitting type and hardware kit, and other lengths and end fittings are available on request. Compared with porcelain and wooden guy insulators, this design is unbreakable and light, has high and stable mechanical strength, and its durability is maintained by UV protection.
The insulators complement the range of anchors, including disc and cross anchors, and guy hardware, so a complete guy assembly can be obtained from one manufacturer. They are made at the fiberglass products plant, which also produces UVMAXX crossarms and brackets.
