Description
The manufacturer has more than 30 years of experience in fiberglass pultrusion. All crossarms are made and shipped from the plant in Newberry (South Carolina) and are listed by RUS. The structural basis is a foam-filled pultruded beam with a radial Duracore structure for increased strength. The UV-protective outer layer is bonded directly to the core, so painting is not needed and there are no places from which failure can start due to chipping. The end caps are mechanically secured and the mounting hardware is non-welded. Three levels of UV protection are provided, including 10,000 hours of accelerated testing per ASTM G154 and improved resistance to tracking and erosion per ASTM D2303.
A special resin gives UL94 V-0 flame resistance (ASTM D635 and ASTM D3801): the crossarm is self-extinguishing within 1–2 s per cycle and does not sustain combustion, which is required in areas prone to forest fires. According to the manufacturer, the service life is 80 years without loss of strength, and only two inspections are needed over 80 years. There is no rot, moisture absorption or insect damage, and the strength is 440% higher than that of wood.
Crossarms 5–20 ft long are made for tangent and deadend applications, with braces, and in a Coastal version for coastal areas. The series are PS, PT (medium loads), PY (extra heavy), PW, PX and the new PF and PK. Beam cross-sections are 3⅝ × 4⅝″ and 4 × 6″, with breaking loads up to 17,000 lb. The crossarms are lighter than wooden ones, supplied assembled, allow drilling in the field and come in gray or brown. The modular fiberglass bracket is attached to wooden, concrete, fiberglass and steel poles with bolts or a band. Aluminum mounts come as single, double and triple with 0° and 15° rise, and on a storm-resistant pole one bracket accommodates 12 positions instead of 6.
Fiberglass brackets with the UVMAXX system (optionally with a silicone coating) are used to mount equipment, pin insulators, downleads and braces.
The H-Frame kit is supplied as a complete flame-resistant crossarm set for 69, 115, 138, 345 and 361 kV, with pole spacing of 10 to 30 ft, and includes X-braces and clamps.
