Description

DS-M strain insulators are designed for dead-end and terminal poles of 15–46 kV overhead distribution lines, as well as for tension points at taps and crossings. One light polymer insulator replaces a porcelain or glass tension string.

The silicone rubber sheath with a conventional rib profile is produced by injection moulding and bonded to a corrosion-resistant fibreglass core 16 mm in diameter. The clevis-tongue fitting is compatible with typical tension clamps and attachment hardware of distribution networks. Mechanical characteristics are common across the series. The specified mechanical load SML is 15 737 lb (70 kN), working load RTL is 7869 lb (35 kN) and maximum torsional load is 37 ft·lb (50 N·m).

DS-15M (15 kV) has a construction length of 330 mm, dry arc distance of 188 mm, creepage distance of 401 mm, 60 Hz dry flashover voltage of 90 kV, wet 65 kV, CIFO +140/−145 kV and weight of 1.2 kg. DS-25M and DS-28M have creepage distances of 800 and 627 mm respectively and dry flashover voltages of 150 and 130 kV, and the voltage class of DS-28M is 28 kV. DS-35M (35 kV) has a length of 559 mm, creepage distance of 954 mm, flashover voltage of 170/155 kV and CIFO +280/−290 kV. DS-46M (46 kV) has a length of 626 mm, creepage distance of 1340 mm, flashover voltage of 187/166 kV, CIFO +323/−380 kV and weight of 1.6 kg. All five sizes share the same mechanical characteristics and rod diameter, while creepage distance and flashover voltages rise from DS-15M to DS-46M. All characteristics meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI C29.13 (2000) and LWIWG-01 (96).

Instead of a string of several porcelain or glass elements, one light insulator is installed, which makes the work of line crews easier. The sheath is joined to the rod without seams by injection moulding. The insulators are used on new lines and during insulation replacement, especially in polluted areas, because silicone is hydrophobic. They are packed 18 or 9 pieces per box, and 216–432 pieces per pallet.
