Description

The KSTAR distributed DC system of 360–720 kW is built on a different logic than a single-enclosure station. It consists of two parts. The power unit (host) converts the energy and stands separately, while the remote terminals are located near the parking bays. The terminal footprint is only a quarter of that of a traditional station.

This layout is needed at hubs with limited space. Bulky power equipment is moved to a convenient location, and compact terminals remain in the parking area. The configuration is flexible, and the number of connectors is set from 1 to 12. System power is distributed between the terminals within 360–720 kW. The distributed architecture separates what takes up a lot of space from what the driver works with. In a single-enclosure station, the power electronics stand next to the connector. Here the power unit can be placed at the edge of the site, and only the terminals with connectors remain in the charging area. Because a terminal takes a quarter of the usual footprint, it is easier to place on a narrow plot.

The KSTAR configuration of 1 to 12 connectors makes it possible to start with a small number of bays and expand them, and liquid cooling of the connector is appropriate where charging runs at high power. Noise during a session is lower than in stations without such cooling, which matters for hubs next to residential buildings.

The connector is liquid-cooled. This noticeably reduces connector heating during charging and also reduces noise during a session. The maximum system efficiency is up to 96%. In standby mode the module consumption is zero, so the station uses no energy while idle. The KSTAR terminal is built so that it can be washed with water, and it is protected against dust. Cleaning does not require disassembly, which is an important point for open-air sites where dust and dirt reach the equipment.

When choosing the system, the number of parking bays, the area allocated for the terminals and the grid connection capacity are compared. The power unit is placed where it is convenient to bring in power and cooling. The terminals are placed in the charging area. The final configuration is agreed against the KSTAR technical data.
