Description
Hydrogen has high thermal conductivity and low density. Therefore ventilation losses are lower, and more power is obtained from the same dimensions. The frame is compact and the machine can be transported by rail, which simplifies delivery to site. The design includes gas coolers, a gas system with a manifold and fans on the rotor shaft. The fans drive hydrogen through the active steel, the windings and the gas coolers.
Two versions are produced. With indirect cooling of the stator winding the maximum delivered rating is 610 MVA, with direct hydrogen cooling up to 990 MVA. The voltage is up to 25 kV, the rotational speed 3000 or 3600 rpm for 50 and 60 Hz networks. The insulation has thermal class 155 (F), and the temperature rise is limited to class 130 (B), so the machine keeps a thermal margin. Efficiency reaches 99.0 %.
The VP-X series combines enhanced cooling, higher efficiency and smaller dimensions. The gas cooler with a modified fin shape is more compact, so the generator diameter is smaller. A fan with higher efficiency gives higher pressure and flow, and cooling of the stator and rotor is improved. Electromagnetic losses and forces are optimised by three-dimensional finite element calculation (3D FEM). The VP-X test unit rated 870 MVA with a power factor of 0.90 at 3600 rpm and 60 Hz showed an efficiency of 99 %. According to the company, as of December 8, 2014 this is the world level for machines of this class. The VP-X generator received the Good Design Award 2014.
VP-X technologies are also used in the modernisation of existing machines. Modernisation includes new stator insulation, improved rotor ventilation, a higher-efficiency fan, a non-magnetic partition and bearings with direct lubrication. As of March 2017 the manufacturer had delivered 731 hydrogen-cooled machines.
For operation, online partial discharge monitoring, remote monitoring with data analysis and the GenSPIDER robotic inspection are offered. From April 1, 2024 the generator business was transferred to a separate group company, which now handles supply and service of new machines.
