SFM / FTC — air-cooled turbine generators up to 400 MVA
SFM and FTC air-cooled turbine generators with ratings up to 400 MVA are intended for small and medium-capacity steam and gas turbines. They are installed in combined-cycle units, industrial CHP plants and biomass power plants. The manufacturer emphasizes simple design, ease of maintenance and short installation times.

Description
The machines are synchronous, two-pole, with a speed of 3000 or 3600 rpm for 50 and 60 Hz networks. The rated voltage reaches 21 kV, and the efficiency is up to 98.8 %. The series has two design versions. SFM (Simple Frame Modular) is built on a modular frame for small and medium-capacity generators up to the 100 MVA class. FTC (Fan-to-Cooler) is designed for powerful machines from 100 to 400 MVA, in which the fan delivers air directly to the coolers. A separate series of four-pole generators of the 20 MVA class is also produced.
The main components are the stator frame, stator core and winding, rotor, bearings, fan and air cooler. Cooling is by air, in a closed cycle through air coolers. The insulation has thermal class 155 (F), and the temperature rise is kept within class 130 (B), which gives the winding a reserve of life. The rotor and stator are designed to operate in pair with a steam or gas turbine at the same speed, without a gearbox.
To increase the unit rating, a new ventilation scheme calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used. It reduces overheating throughout the volume of the machine, and from the same frame size a higher output can be obtained. A compact high-efficiency propeller fan produces the required pressure with lower ventilation losses, so the overall efficiency of the generator also grows. The cooling scheme was verified by calculations over the entire rating range of the series, so that the winding temperature remains uniform.
Air cooling does not require a hydrogen system with oil seals and gas handling facilities. For this reason such turbine generators are simpler to operate and suit sites that have no personnel trained to work with hydrogen cooling. For an industrial CHP plant or a biomass plant this means less auxiliary equipment and simpler requirements for the machine hall.
For these generators online partial discharge monitoring, remote monitoring, GenSPIDER robotic inspection without removing the rotor, and refurbishment with rewinding of the stator and rotor are available. From 1 April 2024 the generator business has been transferred to a subsidiary company. In total the group has supplied about 3000 generators and associated equipment.
