Description
FusionDrive combines a medium-speed permanent magnet generator and a wind turbine gearbox in one housing. The module was created by the manufacturer and Moventas, one of the largest makers of wind turbine gearboxes, and was brought to market in 2010. The manufacturer calls FusionDrive the most compact medium-speed arrangement on the market. For the turbine builder, the generator and gearbox become a single unit that is supplied and installed together.
All active parts of the generator, the stator and the permanent magnet rotor, are assembled directly around the second stage of the gearbox. The generator and gearbox run on shared bearings. The oil of the gearbox lubrication system also cools the generator, so the machine has no separate cooling circuit. A separate shaft, a coupling and the generator's own bearing units are also eliminated. The drive train becomes shorter, the number of components falls, and installation in the nacelle is simpler. According to the manufacturer, the module has the lowest mass in its class.
The generator belongs to the manufacturer's range of medium-speed PMGs rated for power up to 10 MW and a speed of 100–600 rpm. The rotor field is produced by magnets, so external excitation, slip rings and brushes are not needed. The simple and robust design gives very high turbine availability. Fewer wearing parts means fewer failures and less maintenance. The design is adapted to the specific turbine and its operating conditions. The manufacturer points to high efficiency across the whole wind speed range, including partial loads, which increases annual energy production (AEP).
The module is connected to the grid through a full-power frequency converter. Together with it, the wind turbine rides through voltage dips (fault ride-through) and provides full reactive power compensation, as grid codes require. The converter fully decouples the generator speed from the grid frequency, so the turbine runs at variable speed. The manufacturer tests its generators and drives at full power in its own Large Drive Test Center.
FusionDrive is installed on new offshore and onshore multi-megawatt wind turbines where minimum nacelle mass, compactness and fewer drive train components matter. For the integrator this is one unit instead of three separate ones, the generator, the coupling and the gearbox, with a single lubrication system.

Questions and answers
How does FusionDrive differ from a separate generator with a gearbox?
The active parts of the generator are assembled around the second stage of the gearbox, with a common housing and shared bearings. A separate shaft, coupling and generator cooling circuit are not needed.
What power range does the product line cover?
FusionDrive belongs to the manufacturer's range of medium-speed PMGs of up to 10 MW with a speed of 100–600 rpm.
How is the generator cooled in the module?
By the oil of the gearbox lubrication system. The machine has no separate cooling circuit, which reduces mass and the number of units in the nacelle.
