WPI/WPII high-voltage open-type induction motors to NEMA MG1, 2–13.8 kV, 200–10,000 hp
The WPI/WPII series covers high-voltage open drip-proof induction motors for 2–13.8 kV with a power of 200–10,000 hp (approximately 150–7460 kW). It is designed to NEMA MG1 for the North American market. The main loads are reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, pumps and fans at oil and gas, chemical and metallurgical enterprises.

Description
The designations WPI and WPII come from the NEMA classification, where the classes are named Weather Protected Type I and Type II. Both describe an open construction with direct ventilation by ambient air, protected against weather effects. The manufacturer aimed the series at the North American market, so the motors comply with IEC, NEMA and API, as well as the electrical codes NEC (USA) and CEC (Canada). Certificates are IECEx, CSA and UL.
Cooling code IC01 means an open machine with a fan on its own shaft. In the IC06 version the air is supplied by an independent fan, and the flow does not depend on rotor speed, which is convenient for long operation at reduced speed. The degree of protection is up to IP24. The shaft height is H355–710, the speed is 280–3600 rpm, and the rated voltage is 2000–13,800 V. The motor is supplied from a 50/60 Hz grid or from a frequency converter. The standard version is intended for installation altitudes up to 1000 m above sea level, and for sites at 1000–5000 m the manufacturer prepares the machine to order.
The rotor has a cast aluminium cage or copper bars. The mounting arrangement is IMB3, foot-mounted with a horizontal shaft. The manufacturer points to a lower shaft height at higher power, increased efficiency, reduced noise and convenient maintenance access. The series is specifically aimed at driving reciprocating compressors, although the list of loads also includes centrifugal compressors, pumps and fans.
For hazardous areas under the North American classification, Class I Division 2 and Class I Zone 2 versions are provided. The motors are used in the oil, gas and chemical industries, the coal sector and metallurgy, at power plants, in ports and in mechanical engineering. Division 2 and Zone 2 correspond to areas where a flammable gas atmosphere appears only in abnormal operation, so a machine without sparking parts and without a flameproof enclosure is permitted there.
In Ukraine the series makes sense when modernising equipment that was originally supplied to American standards. The second niche is enclosed rooms with clean air, where an open motor design is acceptable under operating conditions. Before replacement, the shaft height, speed and grid voltage are checked against the data of the existing motor, and for operation from a frequency converter the cooling scheme is clarified right away.

Questions and answers
What voltage and power are WPI/WPII motors made for?
The voltage is 2000–13,800 V and the power 200–10,000 hp, approximately 150–7460 kW. The shaft height is H355–710, the speed 280–3600 rpm.
Can WPI/WPII be installed in a hazardous area?
Yes, under the North American classification Class I Division 2 and Class I Zone 2 versions exist. The motors have IECEx, CSA and UL certificates.
Do these motors work from a frequency converter?
Yes, the series is designed for supply from a 50/60 Hz grid or from a frequency converter. For operation at reduced speed there is the IC06 cooling scheme with an independent fan.
