E-Pack DS — electric motor or generator with integrated planetary gearbox 1–40 MW
E-Pack DS is a joint development of the manufacturer and Voith in which the electrical machine and a planetary gearbox are assembled into one unit rated from 1 to 40 MW. The package works as a high-speed electric drive for compressors and pumps or as a generator unit with a steam or gas turbine. It is used in chemicals, petrochemicals, power generation and oil and gas.

Description
The main task of the package is to replace steam and gas turbine drives with electric motors. The second field covers compact generator units, from mobile containerized generators to marine installations. The electrical part is made four- or two-pole for 1500/1800 or 3000/3600 rpm. Gearbox ratios of 2.5–11 give 4500–38 000 rpm on the high-speed shaft. The package is modular and standardized, with the main attention paid to couplings and bearings.
As an example, the manufacturer gives the drive of a centrifugal compressor of 10.7 MW. The motor turns at 1500 rpm, the high-speed shaft at 13 440 rpm, the ratio is 8.96, and the efficiency of the planetary gearbox is about 99 %. Compared with a parallel-shaft gearbox, power losses are about 50 % lower and overall efficiency is up to 1 % higher. Payback, according to the manufacturer, is usually 2–3 years over a service life of 20–30 years.
The unit is up to 30 % shorter and up to 10 % lighter than a separate drive line and occupies approximately 30 % less area. The coaxial layout removes the 500–800 mm shaft offset that a parallel-shaft 10 MW gearbox cannot do without. A separate foundation for the gearbox is not needed, and installation is done on simple coaxial frames. The planetary stage has only three planet bearings. Shared oil lines, instrumentation and terminal boxes simplify installation, and optionally the unit includes its own lubrication system.
The package is usually connected to the turbine or compressor without sensitive high-speed bearings, so there is less wear and loss. The drive line is calculated for torsional and lateral vibrations and made with a coordinated grounding scheme that protects against bearing and shaft currents. The unit is assembled and tested at the plant as a single package, and a separate trial run before installation is not required.
E-Pack DS suits new and upgraded compressor and pump installations and generator units of steam-turbine CHP plants. An example of such a unit is a biomass CHP plant with a 6.3 kV, 8330 kVA, 1500 rpm generator and a flange-mounted gearbox. For selection, state the power, speed of the driven machine, the type of turbine or compressor, and the area and weight limits.
